Legendary Skial King
Because the only things that get picked on the Custom Maps server are Wacky Races and other detritus.
This server would feature a rotation of popular community maps such as:

pl_swiftwater

cp_croissant
Cp_croissant_redbase.png

And other prominent creations. No cp_orange abominations or concepts clothed in dev textures.
We can construct a proper rotation and discuss which maps to include if this gets any interest.

The purpose of this server would not to cater to quickplay users looking to sink a few hours into never-ending 2fort+, but to provide a stable, no BS*, properly moderated server for people to enjoy the change of pace that community maps can offer.

We'd have to do a bit of advertising on a few other TF2 communities to gain and maintain a moderate player count, but I think if done properly this server would be filled consistently enough to make opening additional Community Maps servers in other locations viable. I've only been able to find these maps on private, ridiculous*, or high-latency servers. Here's the wiki's list of the highlights.

Think of it as our first actual attempt at PR and/or community outreach.
I feel like we can prove we're not just a large collection of Valve-like servers by at least trying to offer something to the non-casual audience. When a new player asks which servers to avoid, we're usually not on the list, but we aren't on the list of good ones, either. I think this is largely due to the fact that you're just not going to get the kind of friendly, skilled, consistent set of regulars for a server that makes TF2 truly enjoyable if that server is on quickplay.

Or maybe I'm just farting out my mouth and this will get us nowhere, but hey, it's better than Terdy's shit.

*see: Quake Sounds, Roll the Dice, VIP, bullshit, ect.

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.
I would think that ugc players would pub this server because it would have ugc maps like swiftwater that don't get pubbed in most servers.

This is true although Hei, Stabby, -ts- in general, yz50 and others are always on our Badwater/Payload servers lol

But yeah it would draw more "pros" to Skial...

Swifwater is an awesome map, would like to see more people play this outside of comp, but changing a server because people choose the same map on it would be counterproductive.

If there is enough people interested in such a server, they would outnumber the few people still on our custom maps server.

And NY is central to the US and EU.

What if I just added the UGC maps to the custom map server maplist?
I'm assuming the people who go there to use balloon race and those other maps wouldn't care because they would make sure those makes wouldn't get picked or would vote off of it and I doubt they would like to play with the people were trying to attract

Certainly swiftwater_ugc and turbine_pro_rc2. having them all on the server is not going to hurt, people wont be forced to choose them.

If someone filters "pl_swiftwater" they aren't going to see the current custom map server running "MARIO_KART_2_v30" nor would anyone looking for a serious game be interested in joining this server. I only suggest central US because there are EU and N. America divisions in UGC.

You wont get hardly anyone from EU on a central us server, I am closest out of 99% of EU to chicago and I ping at around ~250. NY i get ~100, so is actualy playable.

Would your average ugc player be willing to join a server with 100 ping? It might be best to cater to the entirety of the US instead of trying to appease both US and EU.

The majority of comp players wouldn't want to play with a ping over 50-70, I dont think a map change in itself would attract EU players anyway. I do know there is a small section of EU lobby players that will play NA servers if the map is one they like, and nothing else up in EU, and vise versa, but lobby is limited in choice so this is really driven through a need to play in the comp format.
I also think that there will not be many who choose to play a map because it is associated with ugc, It's more of a case of people like the map, so they play it, or they just want a change from their regular pub map now and again. and with this season of UGC drawing to an end it's probably even less that would make the choice.. so probably best not to design a 24/32 public server with comp players in mind at all.

A custom maps server that isn't full of retarded game modes like Wario-Ware, Balloon Race, or Wacky Races would be great. Only time I see the current custom maps server full is if it's Randomizer or something. Having an actual serious game mode custom maps server would be great, the only problem is possibility of not filling.

Back when I played a few lobbies on TF2, I ran into the maps swiftwater and croissant. Personally, I find the clean, simple textures of croissant looks minimalist yet good, and swiftwater is already popular in this thread as it is.

I don't even play TF2 anymore but would still vouch for this. +1

As a Source SDK user, +1

As someone growing tired of the same old same old (hence the MvMs lately) +1

Yeah, im sure I could find these maps somewhere else. But I think a Community Map Server is a great idea. I did that very thing with my own FC2 Community - I ran one server with my particular standard and style of maps, then one with my main Mappers/Admins' work, and the third was pure community maps. The third, I would read console logs and evaulate how players felt about the maps. Ones that got a lot of bad reviews/comments got removed and replaced with others until we had a nice stable of Community Maps, keeping things fresh.

I was actually considering running my own server or two with my work and some other Community maps...I have the hardware. I have enough Steam TF2 Friends that are mature to have the Admins...Id just have to upgrade my interwebs and Im not into spending extra $$ on gaming right now. That and it would seriously detract from my Source Mod time.
