Microsoft Security Essentials detected something the second I started the scan, try that.

I use MSE.

I read somewhere that even Microsoft advises using something other than MSE now.

DO NOT RUN THESE SCR's (it's executables for screensavers)

.SCR files can also be scripts. they can also simply be renamed .EXE files to detour any restrictions placed on EXE files by antivirus programs or malware
in this case, they're renamed .EXEs programmed with VisualBasic
both of them happen to be identical, judging by the filesize and CRC checksum

You could probably edit them with visual, and see what they were.
Just open it in a sandboxie.

Yes it does cause problems. But I use MSE, Malwarebytes and Spybot. The last two are not antivirus.

AVG is mediocre. Use avast or MSE, or a paid one like Kaspersky / BitDefender.

As for scanning, use MalwareBytes + Spybot S&D. Both are solid programs.
IIRC, Avast also has a boot time scan.
