Just got the notification today, I wonder if some programs will be fucked up because of the update

Apparently, some programs you have won't work or may not work correctly. One thing that's bothering me is that I entered in my email address but a confirmation email hasn't come yet.

Maybe it'll come eventually. Either way, the whole upgrade is free so anyone who doesn't get the email or register can still get it.

I am thinking this is a marketing ploy by MS. I wouldn't put it past them to give out a dumbed down, less feature rich, free release to people in order to give them a taste and encourage them to pay to upgrade to a higher tier. Every Windows has different tiers, ie Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, ect, so I doubt this will be any different.

Edit: Nevermind I am wrong. Apparently they keep your current tier. Also another interesting note, even the pirated versions are getting these free upgrades, so the pirates will soon have free, legitimate Windows lol.

I feel as if Microsoft is trying to gain back their customers that went to Apple by doing this, but at the same time, it was a good idea for how much people DESPISED Windows 8, but I liked 8. the only think I'm not big on in 10 is Cortana, if she stays on your taskbar.

Step 1: Infiltrate pirated pcs through "free upgrade".
Step 2: Wipe everything if user has pirated version, forcing them to buy real license.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit

There must be something behind the "even pirates get a free upgrade" no?
They will probably get it with no support. there was an update for windows defender which had in the notes that pirate copies of windows would be blocked from using updates.

Pirated versions (most) get updates just fine. If they didn't, pirates wouldn't already be getting these free upgrade messages. You may be onto something though. If people are using other pirated MS software, such as Office or anything, perhaps MS has built in better detection systems that will disable those. I guess we shall just have to wait and find out. However, it would just be a matter of time before crackers found a new way to circumvent the new systems, as always.

I downgraded from windows 8 since I had so many issues with it. Hopefully windows 10 doesn't have the same issues. I mean, it does look pretty cool to be honest. Besides, I can always just downgrade again if windows 10 isn't as great as it looks like it's supposed to be.

many people downgraded from Windows 8, which is my primary guess at why Windows 7 users are eligible for the free upgrade

eh windows 8 was shit but it was durable, and by the rules of windows, 10 should be good, plus i've heard the ones testing the uncomplete windows 10 that its great
so yeah im betting its gonna be pretty good

I'm just glad that this update is free. I'm hoping it'll live up to the hype.

I think Microsoft is most likely doing it because Apple has done it the past two upgrades. They have to be able to compete with free upgrades. However you have to pay to get Windows 10 if you don't upgrade for free this month. Apple keeps their upgrades free, so I wonder how that will work out.

Also where are you guys getting your information about pirate versions getting upgraded? Last I read Microsoft was talking about it in March, but they decided against doing that when they officially announced the free upgrade a few days ago.
