Discuss here about setting up new servers and maps.

Current Status
  • Currently I am thinking about throwing out our Granary server for lack of players.
  • We also have lots of space on USW and EU2 due to the update that reduced CPU usage.
There is room for 2-3 more servers on US1
  • Unfortunately due to the release of Skyrim, TF2 players have been reduced by 50%, so we need to be cautious in our expansions.

No one seeded Gravelpit so I got rid of it.

If no one is seeding their favorite servers I will have to change it to the popular run of the mill maps.

It's either this, or have an empty server.

I think this is an overreaction to Skyrim being popular. Why would you want to run a group of servers that don't even offer the standard Valve maps?

Here are my thoughts: http://www.skial.com/threads/server-changes.6505/

Bottiger said it himself. People are playing Skyrim. TF2 traffic is down 50%.

For what reason do you think the "hype already ended?"
Cause a lot of people (myself included) stoped playing it. Skyrim got boring pretty quick. I have a guy with lvl 100 two handed and 95 heavy armor (level is like 38 or so) and just nothing is appealing anymore. I know that many of my friends who played Skyrim feel the same way and as Bottiger said the traffic went down.

The skyrim hype is almost over already. There are 30,000 TF2 players.

If 10-15 players out of 30,000 can't find their way to the Gravelpit server, the server isn't going to fill up next month.

How many people are going to donate when you don't even offer standard Valve maps? I think the problem with the Gravel Pit server is that it's a cesspool of immaturity that admins rarely go near. I play on there because I donate to Skial and I can usually coax people into raising the maturity level but that's not your run-of-the-mill Gravel Pit server.

That's anecdotal evidence. Take a look at what the #2 selling steam game is today. I can't remember Skyrim being any lower than #2 since the day it came out.

Even if I switch it back it will still remain empty.

I tried to join a few hours ago and had people messaging me (20d play time, top 25 on HL stats) asking where it went.

I know that it's hard to convey tone over the Internet so I want to make it clear that I respect you and want this to come across as constructive feedback. What's the point of donating $5 a month if you have to idle in the standard Valve servers for fear of them being shut down? You honestly believe that when 55,000 people aren't playing Skyrim via Steam that TF2 traffic won't go up? I think that this is a shortsighted decision. Not everything is about pushing traffic and impressions: you're shaping a community here. It's not all black and white.

Low traffic is bad for the community. Look at it that way. Low traffic means less money with adds. Lower traffic means empty servers. Lower traffic is just simply bad If I understand things right

You should tell them that they should've seeded the server. I don't want to shut down servers but that's just the way it has to be. Do you want Skial to risk completely closing up because your favorite map didn't have enough players in it? If you want, I can give you a refund if you donated recently. Or you can nominate gravelpit on the rotation servers.

The point about Skyrim is that those 55,000 players aren't all TF2 players. Most of them are bored of TF2 already and wouldn't be coming back after they finished Skyrim. The current TF2 player count is close to it's long term trend.

getting back your favorite server and promoting yourself for admin in one post. Osprey, I see what you did there, and I like it.

You've been over there. Remember that one kid that we couldn't figure out if he was challenged or trolling? It's the neglected servers that fall by the wayside.

Nobody is on US11. Nobody will be on US11 because you're just spltting traffic with the 24/7 servers. You're moving impressions from one server to another. You're filling up a bucket of water on one side of the lake, walking it around the other side and pouring it in.

If everyone that plays TF2 played on skial servers, that would be true. But that's not the case, it's also about attracting new users, and keeping them sufficiently entertained.

You're half-right. It's not the case because nobody plays on the Skial "popular maps" rotation servers period.
