Scarcely Lethal Noob
After playing a little bit on the Skial Badwater+ EU server I noticed lots of lag. Loss should never be above 0 and on your server it fluctuates between 1 and 4.

Such a high minrate only produces lags and doesn't make the game better.

Please decrease sv_minrate to 30k or even 0.

Just bumping this back up for you. I get a quite a bit of lag, my ping is low, I usually play on the Dustbowl NY1 server and I am from Central NY. It's unacceptable and quite frustrating because I get quite a few missed shots and players appear to teleport, rubber band or skip about, either it's something with the configuration or better servers are needed.

You're going to get loss/lag if it's a 32 player server and it's full no matter how much you throw at. The game was designed for 24, not 32 slots (aka, it's mostly client lag, not server). The minrate settings have nothing to do with it because I believe the servers have a 1Gbps connection so we should be able to handle the 90kbps we're getting sent from players. Say we run 10 tf2 servers per server. If they're all 32 player maxed out that's 320 players * 90kbps each. So that's only 28.8Mbps going to the server. A 1Gbps can easily handle. Also, if you're on a decent connection, you should be able to handle the 90kbps upload just fine. My own home connection has a 8Mbps upload speed. If it's set to 15 or 30k then you start to hit a lot more choke on a 32 player server since it's waiting for data.

I have a decent connection and I play on a 24 player server. It even lags when not many players are on the server, sometimes I'll play on other servers (besides Skial servers) where there is little to no lag.

Are they in a different location? It's different connecting to a server in LA than in NY.

Nah, this is even on the Dustbowl NY1 or NY2 server and as I said I'm from Central New York. My ping on that server is usually between 40 - 50, sometimes below 40.

That is very strange, I can try to get a video uploaded to illustrate the lag issue I am experiencing. I know it's not my connection or system as both are very decent.

@isil, I also noticed your ping isn't much higher than mine which is strange considering I reside in the same state that the server supposedly resides in.

It's most likely the route your ISP is taking the server. Honestly if you're that close you should be getting 10-20 ping max. It might not be your equipment though. I've noticed Road Runner / Time Warner seem to be very bad in this regard.

EDIT: From Central Connecticut I get about 17 ping to the NY servers with about 10 hops on the traceroute. I bet if you did a simple ping and tracert you'll see it's higher which means that it's an issue with your ISP and not our server. Try to do a line quality test and see what happens: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality

Also note, it could just be network congestion in your neighborhood. I would try to connect off-peak hours and see if you get better ping. Don't know where you live, but this is from Buffalo...http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27534429-TWC-Roadrunner-Buffalo-NY-Very-high-packet-loss-bad-pings pretty big thread and it's recent as of last week

I live in Auburn as my profile lists. Going to see if I can do anything to improve my ping.

According to the line quality test everything checks out fine. There has also been other players on the server complaining about lag, not sure why some are lagging while other players are fine.

For the love of god dont complain about 40 - 50 :| Mine is usually 100. Id do unspeakable things to get 40- 50. :megusta:

Well I don't mind the ping so much as the lag, with 40 - 50 ping I shouldn't be lagging like this.

The problem has to be on your end / computer. If our servers were lagging as much as you say, we would be having a lot more than two people complaining about it.

There is other people complaining about lag, I'm not sure why no one bothers to report, then again nothing ever seems to get reported on the Dustbowl NY servers. Also I am pretty sure it's not my system, I have a fairly powerful gaming rig and also line quality checks out fine. When I go to any other server (besides Skial servers) I get little to no lag so long as I choose a server closest to me. In fact one time I decided to play on a Lotus server and was amazed at how little lag there was, most of my shots registered, no one was skipping about. I'm trying to do some stuff on my end to see if anything improves but I'm doubtful that there is anything I can do to reduce the lag or my ping.

What are the rates set there? I believe even if the server is set to 0 the client enforces a minrate of 30000 since the MvM update. You know something is up with your ISP most likely if you get a traceroute like this:

Tracing route to reliablesite.dmarc.nj3.atlanticmetro.net [108.60.149.52]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.74.6.2
2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.74.0.1
3 2 ms 2 ms 2 ms 10.249.0.169
4 7 ms 7 ms 7 ms 68.139.158.241
5 12 ms 12 ms 12 ms 152.164.230.46
6 9 ms 9 ms 9 ms 10.64.0.1

Also, it should only be taking 10 hops or less to get to that server from where you are.

Have you ever used the leatrix latency fix? It was made to reduce latency in WoW but can cause issues in other games as it changes the way your network handles packets.

I actually have this enabled since I used to play wow and I don't experience lag like he's saying and I'm on the NY, Chicago, and Texas servers often.

It really depends on your rig as to whether it affects other games negatively. Most newer systems wont be hurt by it.

I don't play WoW, so nope, that is not my problem. I thought it might have been something with Windows 7 as I read the default network settings for Windows 7 cause issues for some. So I tried tweaking Windows 7 network settings and that made no difference. Is there anything I can do if this is on my end, can my isp do anything to resolve this?
