Either mario or villager. Villager is kinda dumb in the demo, because every other character has at least one move he can pocket.
Pro tip: Villager can pocket pikachus Thunder, he just has to jump in the air when he uses it, thought.

When villager pockets he is invincible for a few seconds, just enough to make his FS "miss". He doesn't actually pocket it, he just dodges it.

I can't tell if I'm really bad (or only slightly better than average) or if I'm just being overly careful because I'm scared of breaking my circlepad.

I know you're not a dumbass, so you're fine. Don't smash the thing and it won't break. I have 23 hours in the demo (or so) and I haven't noticed anything wrong with my control pad. People are using their 3ds' like gamecube controllers, and expecting it not to break. Gamecube controls are fucking bricks.
