I... can't even get to that part.... And whatever it is that I have came with SP1 included.
Manually shut off computer by holding powah button. "Start Windows Normally". Then try restarting.

That's my suggestion. Wait for Shula or someone who isn't me to okay it, though.

I can never get back to my desktop after that. I win up being continually stuck at booting up >> Failure to configure updates, don't turn off power, etc. >> restarting >> eventually rolling back installation to reinstall and try the next idea.

Pretty sure if you pay for it things work a lot smoother...

Nope, had an official copy, or rather my college has a bunch of official copies, it always asks for activation even though they've been activated for a while, as well as the updates just fucking suck either way. If people were to adopt Linux or OS X there wouldn't be that many issues going on.

That said, I'm not sure how to fix this, I'd take PsychoRealm's advice, but he has it installed so.. you're gonna have to check to see if it's been "activated" to see if it accepts updates in the first place.

Ok.. What it looks like is that Windows is failing to install one particular update for some reason (deadlock situation or something like that). Any chance you could find out what update is it? You should be able to open the Event Log and under "System" node see what update is failing.
It should look something like that:

Code:
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2732500)

Installation date: ‎9/‎11/‎2012 10:26 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80071A90

Update type: Recommended

Install this update to resolve issues in Windows. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge
Base article for more information. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

More information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2732500

It would be particularly helpful to know what error code is being thrown in (in example above it's 80071A90) since it would really help to troubleshoot the failure. For instance, if error 80071A90 is presented - it means that there is a deadlock that prevents the installation and MS is providing a fix for it...

Once you narrow it down to a specific update, try to download and install it manually and separately and see if it helps.
If it still doesn't work - let me know and I'll upload the image of Win7 x64 Ultimate without SP1 so you could install it from scratch..

Also, try 2 more things:
  1. Disable ALL antivirus software you have when you run Windows Update;
  2. Use Windows Update Troubleshooter tool.

She said she was stuck in a constant rebooting cycle and was unable to open windows even. She may have to get into boot menu and try starting in safe mode and then disable updates and then go from there? Also that torrented version she got had sp1 included so she may have issues since the ones she has to do manually need to be done prior to sp1 being installed to avoid those errors perhaps. You are the knowledgable one her on these issues, psycho so you can probably help her better than me.

Just as an update, I successfully reinstalled the OS from a different image that Questionable Moose sent me, that doesn't have SP1 rolled into it. So can anyone tell me where I would go from here with a solid, clean install?

Thanks a bunch for helping everyone (Psycho, shules, Oaky, Moose) I really appreciate it.

Run Windows Update?

1: Go to the update manager and double check in the settings so it isn't on automatic mode.
2: Hide the update 'KB971033' forever and don't ever install it.

3: Start updating your OS with 2-3 updates each time, preferebly the oldests updates first. If you stumble upon any problem, it will become a lot easier to troubleshoot when you know which update actually made the error.
4: Continue to update until you have both SP1 and nothing else important in the list.

5: Install an antivirus software, but do not use Microsoft Security Essentials (it will do a genuine check).
6: Install everything else you want and you're done.

As long as you stay away from Microsoft website where they check if your OS is legit, their antivirus software or anything that changes your update manager settings (for example the installation of Office 2010 will do that) to prevent the KB971033 to be installed, you will be fine.

I never had to do any of this crap with my version of windows.

I hope that 'any of this crap' doesn't include updating your os and installing an antivirus software, because then I would strongly suggest that you do so.

If you have a genuine version that you bought, I can understand your confusion. It's a very streamlined configuration to get the computer working when you don't have to work around Microsoft.
