Wasn't sure if this belonged in reports or not.

I see a lot of people building inside BLU spawn on Badwater in this area.


I would think it would be considered a bannable exploit, but I see almost every engineer build there. I've even seen them get away with it with admins currently playing on the server. So, it makes me wonder if this is something we would ban for.
 
It is allowed in most competitive leagues, so I don't see why it should be banned on public servers...

We don't use competitive leagues as a guideline for what we should and should not allow. For example, they ban certain weapons but we do not.

I just don't see it as a big deal so I am not going to punish someone for something stupid like this.
 
As long as you do what Rue says (to not let red spies in) you'll be fine. It can be a problem though as a lot of spam will head to that door since there is a sentry.

Its a great tactic if you can build your entrance to level 3, (and it survives the first onslaught) so when you cap first, you can quickly drop the exit by the point.. it speeds things up for engy.. also if you wait long enough you can move your buildings, not sure of the time constrictions but it is possible to move them.

That's not my point. the question was "Is this an exploit?"
If comp doesn't even see this as an exploit, then why would Skial?
 
well ugc allows burning through the door on first point of steel and that's an obvious exploit that shouldnt be allowed

Then you are playing in a UGC-league I never heard off, last season they even took this specific exploit and clearly stated is is not allowed...

*Edit: Guess there is a reason he is ex-admin. I can't find the posts from previous seasons anymore, but I am 2000% sure they did mention the exploit not being allowed on their newspage.
 
You're not supposed to be allowed to build sentries in spawn so this is an exploit. But we allow this for some reason but not burning through the gate as Pyro

An exploit is 'a bug or unintended feature of gameplay that is deliberately and knowingly used by the player to gain an advantage'

The use of func_nobuild is used when the authority (for example the mapmaker, those that pick the rules for a tf2 competitive battle or those that has the license for the actual game) believe that certain places on the map are not suitable to build buildings on; making them unintended features for the authority. Using func_nobuild is not a requirement unless told otherwise by the authority. Being able to build in spawn is not an exploit if the authority makes it an intended feature.

the common group of TF2's mapmakers (and Valve included) have pretty much decided, but without an official requirement, that the spawn room itself should never be intended for players to build in (with exceptions, because different authorities believes in different intentions). But the room outside the actual spawn room, but not beyond the gates have proven to be a very diverse choice if players can build or not. A lot of maps got space where it's possible to build for the attacking team, even Valve got a few maps that has that.

Saying that this IS an exploit is wrong, because the ability to build inside the spawn is entirely dependable on the conditions given by the authority.

Its in that list. Not only that but you have to go to extra lengths to acually build the sentry in the spawn doorway in terms of actually finding the spot to place the thing. It only works at a certain angle and if you are crouching I believe. This would lead me to believe that this was not an intended build spot. Not only that but if you build anything there you cannot freely move it without being ever so careful because the spawn will automatically destroy it. Thirdly and finally I dont think valve would intend for players to build there if they could build an exit and allow spies to teleport into spawn.

The act of building there is an exploit plain and simple but it has been determined as mainly harmless except in cases of teleporter exits by the admin staff so, exploit or not, its a moot point anyways.
