Declined Banning the word "Faggot"

I was told not to use the N word recently and immediatly after I someone said "faggot" and there was no punishment. I was told that the N word was banned because it creates a hostile environment. Obviously it might offend black people. That said, I was wondering why the word fag was praised as a substitute for stupid. Ergo, faggot should be banned.

TL;DR Faggot makes hostile environment = banned

As much as I agree that the word is so inappropriate on so many levels, it's unfortunately part of online and even real life culture. Kids these days say everything is "gay" or "faggy"...hence the wanda sykes commercials. As wrong as it is, unless it's used specifically in a way that they are making fun of the person for being legit homosexual, I don't think it's possible to enforce such a blanket rule.

If there was a possible way for it to be done without running the admins thin and banning a lot of people, I'd be for it - but I don't see one.

While I am not a fan of the word being used, I think that including too many rules in the way of what people are allowed to say may be a bad thing

The average person that plays TF2 is pretty well educated and courteous (to a certain extent)

I think they are with me in rolling their eyes when it is used seriously in an attempt to make someone mad.
 
Well it is a rule and I do try to enforce it because it's more than a rule to me, but I brought this up a while ago with the other admins and frankly most of them don't give a shit. I 110% agree with you, but some other admins don't. If it bothers you enough then talk to me if I'm on if someone's using it.
 
I've considered suggesting that the anti-racism rules be extended to include gender, sexual orientation, and religious discrimination, but I think you underestimate the amount of work that would have to be done to start handing out bans for something thrown around as often as "faggot".

That's like saying, because 4chan says the n word then it's okay to do so elsewhere on the internet. so i feel your point is invalid.

Never once did I say it's ok to do, infact quite the opposite, I emphasized how much I thought it was wrong, I just feel it would require a large amount of work, and I think the result would not be desirable, you could search these forums and find a good few admins who've used the word faggot, even some who use the word rather freely....it's just not possible for admins to control, so thats why I voted no, as I said if there was a way that it wouldn't be a ridiculous amount of effort I'd be for it.
 
The game is rated M, and online experiences are unrated... in fact, I'm pretty sure some of the things I say throughout life are literally illegal. HOWEVER, if I feel someone's playing experience on a Skial server is not as enjoyable as it could be due to coarse language, figgernaggets included, I will take action.

I understand your point but not the logic backing it up. basically saying that "everyone is doing it" doesn't constitute it to be morally correct. Personally I think no words should be banned and tough luck if you get offended but if we're going for a non-ostile envirement we should include the LGBT community. If the N word wasn't enforced then i bet it would be all over the forums too
 
It is...kind of a rule. I think that most admins ban situation by situation. As in..."Stop using that backburner, faggot." is okay but "Go get fucked in the ass by your boyfriend, faggot." is not okay. Implying stupidity with the word "faggot" seems to be alright across the board of admins BUT implying homosexuality is not.

Not my personal logic/opinion, though. I hate the word and think it should be banned in any situation.

Your logic is sound, but my point is it's just unenforceable as much as I wish it wasn't. I'd be all for allowing every word and instead putting a blanket "no hate speech" down. Would allow admins to action based on intent instead of anything else.
 
Maybe a slip or two is fine, but excessive use could be considered in the same category as nigger?
