Declined Banning the word "Faggot"

I was told not to use the N word recently and immediatly after I someone said "faggot" and there was no punishment. I was told that the N word was banned because it creates a hostile environment. Obviously it might offend black people. That said, I was wondering why the word fag was praised as a substitute for stupid. Ergo, faggot should be banned.

TL;DR Faggot makes hostile environment = banned

I miss the good old days, back when the only thing you couldn't say was the N-Word. People need to stop getting so upset about words, it just causes more drama.

Sometimes I feel like an overwhelming majority of the server regulars are perfectly okay with being straight-up douches.

I feel like I'm the only one around here who thinks that it's not unreasonable to have a gaming environment where people can actually have fun without being called racial/sexual slurs. I mean, should we really just be okay with being indecent human beings?

Not at all. There is homosexual infiltration at every level of the government and Obama and Stephen Harper are putting substances in our food that have been proven to cause homosexuality and lung cancer.
 
Any insults regarding race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Nobody on server being offended is not a loophole. This does not include simple discussion of these topics in an intellectual manner.

From what I can see, this means a derogatory use of "faggot" in the context of a stupid person isn't explicitly against the rules, but the admins have been trusted with interpreting it as one if they see fit. In the context of describing a blatant homosexual as kindling, it's absolutely grounds for penalizing someone.

A catch-all rule might be worth looking into, but I don't see what's necessarily wrong with vote mutes, client mutes, or if need be an admin's discretion.

Sigh, time to be all long-winded.

Skial's current admins do an excellent job...not once have I seen them prevented from acting when someone really REALLY had it coming, there are a few people (even forum regulars) who ride that line constantly, but at the end of the day, one can not complain with how this is being run. As I've said numerous time, the word fag while in most cases is a simply a synonym for someone being a douchebag, it can be something homosexually derogatory. But as Rhi said above, if someone is using it in that fashion they are already actioned if it gets extreme. At the end of the day, admins are human, they can only do so much - would I rather them enjoy playing the game they have gratefully volunteered to help police, or come in to deal with a kid who goes "God, heavies are faggots."? Yes, I concur it's a bad word, and it shouldn't be as commonplace as it currently is..but lets face it, it is.

Three friends (two online, one IRL not that it's really all that relevant) that use the word fag more than I've seen hetero's use it. The word has went from a slur for the homosexual to pretty much what "douchebag" once was. I again understand why a lot of you want it fixed, but there's no point in policing it, in extreme cases it's already handled...in anything less than extreme, is there really a point to admin intervention when client and mute vote are on the server?

Regulars are the best line of defense against douchebags, if you don't enjoy them call a vote mute, if they are being excessively trolly or a general nuisance, it will normally pass. If they start getting excessively homophobic, racist, or whatever...use the !report option, I again state I have called numerous reports on hackers and shit, people will pass them if they are fair reports. How many more things do you want to make illegal before we become a "clean christian server" like those terrible EGO servers. (no offense if there are EGO regs/admins here, your servers suck.)

Game servers should be fun, if someone is being an excessive dick, action them...if they are throwing the word around meaninglessly, whatever let it slide. I do not want Skial to become a police state.

Also in addendum - after we ban the word fag, what's next? Anything derogatory to fat people? and after that, anything derogatory to the classes one chooses to play? The entire point of my semi-rant was that once you start limiting shit like this, where will we draw the line?

Seriously though nice post. Faggot though has a huge meaning for me and others, it's really not just another word for douchebag. I agree with your post though.

I have very mixed feelings about you.
 
Unfortunately, half of this forum and half of skial servers are composed of people who don't have enough brain cells to come up with an insult more fruity than "faggot" and will refuse to ban it despite it being an obvious example of double standards. The word "Nigger" is used less as a racist term than the word "faggot" is used as a homophobic term. However, since idiots want to have their useless words, they're going to get them. Everyone knows they're asshats anyway.
