There's been a big rise in public focus on mental disabilities in recent years, and along with that has come increased use of those disabilities as insults. Many players are mentally disabled themselves and may take offence to hearing their disabilities trivialized, they come to play video games to enjoy themselves, not to hear people take a very real and painful part of their lives and use it to put down another person.

I'm not much for political correctness myself, but that sort of behavior doesn't have a place in video games, something that's meant to be an escape from real world problems. So I'd like to suggest today that albeist behavior be added to the rules along with discriminations, to discourage persistent use of the terms. Obviously in this day and age nobody views retarded as an ableist phrase, but such things like repeatedly calling people on your team autistic for not doing what you want should not be looked upon as lightly as it is.

Can you give examples of what kind of language you suggest we shouldn't allow?

Did you know there is a wonderful feature called mute player exists in TF2 itself? You can mute people individually on your side so you don't have to deal with people you don't like.

And I feel the only reason this suggestion exists is because you were punished for racism and want the dude you were arguing with that was making fun of you because you claimed you are "autistic" punished as well

A couple examples from a nice guy I played with earlier tonight, "Typical autistic fuck", and "you fucking asperger". Replace the insult with a disability of your choice, just general, repetitive use of a legitimate medical issue as an insult. The reason I suggest it be placed under discrimination is so it's after repetitive use and down to admin discretion, I do realize it'd be silly to go around muting and banning people for occasional use or lesser phrases that have become more socially acceptable.

And Jerma, for the record I am legitimately autistic, sorry I don't have the medical report on me atm but I guess you'll just have to take my word for it. And who was/wasn't punished for what is irrelevant, while that may have been the trigger for me making this post it doesn't have any bearing on how I feel about the issue or the actions I take. Also you could just make the argument that anything someone does can be fixed by muting them, and in a perfect world that would be true. But there are rules for a reason, and I feel like if you can be reported and muted/banned for being sexist or racist or religiously discriminatory, there should also be a punishment for degrading the mentally disabled.

This is a slippery slope I don't think we should go down. Everyone gets offended by something these days and I don't wanna start punishing people for everything that could be considered offensive. Part of the reason people like skial so much is our rules.

Racism and sexism are big ones that the community voted in.

As you can see here:

It’s easier to just client mute the player. It’s way much easier to do than to just make have to report the person and get their chatlogs and such. Making it a rule is a bit over the top, from my point of view.

Everyone gets offended by something these days and I don't wanna start punishing people for everything that could be considered offensive.

I have to agree, just think about the constant reports and mute/gag/bans that would come in if this would become a rule, or if other people put other rules to things that would be considered offensive. It would a very strict server, and not everyone likes that.

It's way too late and too commonly spoken to enforce this kind of discrimination rule. To be honest, such words have been used so often that being called a 'retard' might even mean you're just good at the game.

I am saying -1 on this even tho I have a disability and I can't do most things in my life if someone said to me Ty go get hit by a car I will just say been there done that to me someone saying it on the internet just means they are trying to gain attention and just ignoring them is all I need to do. Can it be an issue yes it can but muting is the prime example to go with even if most people don't do it, it's the best way to do things, now I know some people can get offended in different ways but sometimes people are not gonna know this right off the bat, hell I tell my friends my back story and they know how I feel in this world, I know I can't spell simple words sometimes but at least they know what I deal with in life.
