Why does "mute" on /votemenu even exist? It's such a redundant function.
EVERY player has access to the default client-mute AND the /ignore command.
You can argue that players don't know how to client-mute or /ignore, but without the notifications teaching you how to /votemenu, players wouldn't know how to use that, either.

The votemute function does nothing but help players bully and alienate people they don't like! It's often younger players that are subjected to this, and it projects a negative view of the community.
If players were more aware of client-mutes and the /ignore command, they could simply mute the person and carry on with their life, they gain all the same benefit they do from a votemute without ruining it for other people who perhaps WANT to listen to the muted person.

You may be surprised how easy it is to get 75% yes votes very unfairly. It causes players to be left with no form of communication even if they haven't done anything wrong, and it's VERY hard to gather "proof" of an unfair mute to report it, especially over mic.

Votemuting is a redundant function that does nothing but spread hate and negativity that can easily be avoided just by being informed of the already existing mute functions that don't ruin the muted's day.
You're simply giving people the ability to be an asshole with no punishment; without this aggresive, hateful function they would be forced to simply client-mute, and it would end better for everyone.

I'm not asking you remove it instantly, it's probably better to get notifications and information spreading around on the client-side mutes before doing so, it's just such a shame that if people were more informed, this doesn't even need to exist.

If something I've said seems shortsighted, or has glaring issues, feel free to point it out. I'm simply speaking my mind; I could very well be incorrect on a few points...
I'm pretty convinced this will get denied, but if I don't try to do something about it, I don't have the right to complain.

This suggestion has been closed. Votes are no longer accepted.
Children shouldn't be playing Team Fortress 2 as they have school and other school related things they should. This should serve them as punishment :^)

Just going to throw out there that I do vote mutes not for myself but for the people playing who don't know how to mute others. As for children being the main target that's not entirely true and is also missing a lot of context, I've seen several kids get vote muted due to their maturity level which is perfectly reasonable imo when the game is rated M for 17+

Vote mute is for the people who are legitimately breaking the rules.

There is some vote abuse that happens, but they can be silenced for that. If you see it keep happening and want to do something about it, record round long demos. Sounds like a pain in the ass, but all you need to do is bind a key to start a demo and bind a key to stop it. All you have to do is press those two keys once a round. I did that before I was admin and it worked wonders.

Votes also last for only 30 minutes just in case someone is vote abused.

And there's a issue of people not reading the rules as is. Trying to get them to read even more information on what they should and shouldn't do with the votemenu wouldn't make a lick of a difference.

Muting a kid for being a kid or for being annoying is considered vote abuse by us, and you can be silenced for that. This is what client mute is for, not the votemenu.

While I witness vote abuse of the silence option, as a TF2 admin they always get silenced themselves for abuse if it turns out to be.

It doesn't happen too often especially not for an hour after somebody gets silenced for votemenu abuse.

Though I'm mainly on the Deathrun/VSH servers which I would have thought had the most vote abuse (Aside from Jailbreak, that's a different story though).

I don't think you understand what I mean by maturity. Their's alot of kids out their that make whale sounds, and say curse words / racial slurs repeatedly even after being asked to stop.

-edit-
plus the double mic echo some kids do with their friends

Cursing isn't against the rules, but racism is. I'm just saying don't vote silence a kid unless they're breaking the Skial rules. I'm putting emphasis on Skial rules because too many people votemute based off their own personal interpretation of what should and shouldn't be allowed rather than going off of the server's rules.

Yeah I pretty much expected this response. It's just far too optimistic of me to expect players to actually know basic functions of the game, and to not be assholes.
Being honest, I wish Valve would make the mute function more apparent, it would save a lot of people a lot of grief.
Forgive me for this, and any passive-aggression, it's just that in my long time playing Deathrun, I've seen such a glaring amount of voteabuse, mostly against people who just genuinely want to have a conversation, but happen to be half an octive too high for assholes to handle...

If you knew anything about people as a whole, it doesn't even matter if Valve makes the client mute button large and bright and shiny and covered in Christmas lights. You can have arrows and everything pointing to it and people still will not know it's there. Even if you tell them where it is they still refuse to learn because they don't want to inconvenience themselves for two seconds to solve a minor issue. Not everyone does this, but enough people do for it to be noticeable.

Yes, voteabuse happens but you can report that vote abuse either on the forums or to an admin. The silencing option is there for a reason. Removing it would be dumb.

thats true, if they mark it a lot, it would be the same, my hud (eve hud) have the button very large but the console covers it, and sometimes i forget it exists and only use the /ignore command

Far as I can tell, this isn't getting done, so someone may as well close it with a "Declined".

If I remember correctly, client side mute doesn't last between disconnects.

And if someone is annoying everyone, it doesn't make sense for 23 people to go through the hassle of muting that 1 person.
