ever played Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective? the main character has more or less the same mechanic, except he's alive and has no control over it, instead having groundhog-day moment loops whenever someone nearby dies. but when his mother dies, he's thrown back to his childhood in 1988
Myriad Colors Phantom World (Musaigen no Phantom World)
apparently, due to a terrorist bomb explosion, a virus is unleashed which messes with the human brain, allowing people to perceive things thought not to exist (ghosts, youkai, what have you. all of them given the catch-all term 'phantom')
