Even if he did get paid for it why be pissed about the fact that he informed us that the gov't was monitoring way more than what the public was okay with? As a US citizen these are good things to know about. I certainly don't want to be ignorant of what the gov't I live under is doing behind the scenes after all.
Because of one simple reason (the way I see it)... By trying to "help other people understand they're being spied upon" he caused colossal damage to the US. And I'm not talking about reputation only. I personally don't give a flying fuck about who might be reading my personal emails, texts, or listening my phone conversation. The reason is simple - I don't do anything illegal or embarrassing. In the same time, I do give a fuck about the country I'm living in and about its well-being. And if taking controls over privacy data helps to prevent 9/11 or Boston bombings - I'm all for it.
Also, if he indeed got paid - it ruins his "altruism" motive completely. And he praises himself for that.
The biggest problems is - he released
global surveillance secrets, not only surveillance in the US. If he started a shitstorm about surveillance in the US - I probably would be OK with that. But he almost ruined the intelligence surveillance methods of the US government overseas thus taking away a serious chunk of intelligence which was being used by the US to form strategy on international relationships.
On top of that, surveillance secrets were just a small chunk of data Snowden has stolen. The vast majority of stolen files were related to the US military capabilities, operations, tactics, techniques and procedures. And even though those files have never gone public - you may never know if China or Russia didn't get their hands on it. Especially considering the fact that first Snowden was seeking shelter in China, and then - in Russia.
