Uncharitable Spy
Me and a friend were shopping about in Stevenage today, I came across a black homeless man sitting on the floor with nothing, he was looking for food on the floor to eat. My mate carried on walking, not realising I had stopped, I felt like I needed to help him. And so I pulled out a tenner, crouched down to him and I asked him; "What would this £10 note mean to you?".. he replied; "As long as it keeps me going another day, I'm a happy man".. I gave him the £10 note and told him to go treat himself, he shook my hand, smiled and said "God bless you brother". Other people had stopped and started to clap for me, I didn't really know how to respond to that.

It made me feel a better person by doing what I did. Now I know £10 isn't much, but to him it felt like £1000 and I was glad that I could help him out.

Kinda dont want to rain on your parade but odds are he bought crack. I'm happy to see some human compassion, yes you did a good thing and you have the right to feel good. I just feel it was wasted, since it just soo easy to just go to a dealer and get like a little crack rock or something

I bought him food for that one night as well.

unfortunally i agree, normally if i want to give something to homeless people i give them food, not saying that all are junkies or drunks but many are and will use money for addictions

edit: post was before i saw Aydind's second post

If you really want to help out a homeless person, give them some fresh socks. Chances are they've been wearing the same pair of dirty socks for days, weeks, months, possibly even years, depending on how long they've been out there. Socks aren't exactly something high up on a homeless man's list of priorities, but for somebody who spends his whole day on his feet, they're amazing to have when they're clean and new.

Also easy-to-open, nonperishable food, like chunky soups with the peel-off lids.

I never give them money, because I know that some of them (obviously not all of them, but some) will just spend the money on drugs/cigarettes/booze, so I don't want to risk contributing to somebody's downfall like that. Whenever I give something, I give them something of real value to them.

Cinic STHAP.

Was believable up until people randomly started clapping.

I don't know if it did or didn't happen, but generally at the end of a fake story "People stood up and applauded" is added. If it is a true story, I applaud your generosity, you kind of cheapen it by advertising the fact that you did it. The act of charity means a lot more when it isn't used for self promotion. Just my two cents.

I get tired of everyone being a fucking know it all when it comes to the homeless.
"If you really want to help them, buy them this. Buy them that. Buy them those."
If you're into that crap, go for it. Buy them some damn socks but if you just want to make them HAPPY - just give them the money. There's only one thing that can happen from that, either they use it wisely or they blow it. Perhaps if they screw it up they wont have a place to live?

I just give people food when I do give something. I work in Chicago so I see at least 10 homeless people on my way to and from work. If they had any desire to get off the streets they could. Ive seen the same people for years.

Trouble is, many haven't got the desire as it is lost over time. They see no way out, depression and mental illness sets in, leading to taking comfort in alcohol or drugs, and then they get stuck in a downward spiral that's very difficult to escape from as their support network is very flimsy to say the least.
