They don't like mainstream rock because they're punks. They were trying to be as provocative as possible by going after a huge, mainstream rock band.

That's a nice sound they put forth. Rarely do I see bands attempt that sort of low-key elegance that doesn't try to pound your eardrums or be overly bubble-gum.
