I should have thought this one through.

A sentient potato should be 10th class. It does nothing but shout obscenities to anyone that passes by.

So you're saying someone should be able to play as GLaDoS? Sounds like fun to me, but how is that different from spectator?

The addition of a tenth class at this juncture would be impractical. Perhaps if they somehow continued the TF2 storyline and created a semi-large expansion of sorts (MVM doesn't fucking count as an xpack), a new class or two could arise and not be detrimental to the game.

A class that specializes in setting traps like mines and immobilizers wouldn't sound too bad. They could be a defensive/support class and their traps could be more visible by spies but barely visible for other classes and could be destroyed through conventional weapon fire.

The only plausible character with an unique playstyle that I think would fit the game is a Wizard/Sorceress.

We have already been able to use spells in the TF2 universe, and it did work (but it was chaotic). The spells and mechanics has to be changed so it doesn't make ordinary gameplay redundant or imbalanced, but I think (with a lot of work) it's a plausible 'expansion' of the game.

But the game is based on 1950's-60's era. Spell casters wouldn't fit into the game in my opinion

I, Black Sabbath, hereby suggest a new class by the name of "Grunt". It's purpose is an introductory middle-man class so new players get the basic gist of game play before selecting their favourite class. Now, there are two obvious problems with this: a), it would be too good so no one would go onto another class, and b), it would serve as the class you play once because it's so carp. And so I have devised the solution: for the first fifty kills you gain from that class, you would get a difficulty level of 0 (ie it's easy, the weapons are powerful etc.) For the next fifty you get difficulty level of 2 (becomes harder, less ammo etc) until a final difficulty level of five. This then forces people to choose another class.
As for equipment, think of a soldier combined with a heavy. Slow moving with a bolt action rifle, pistol and bayonet.

People would make new steam profiles to be get difficultly level 0 for competitive and be overpowered.

This and the fact that valve never puts anything that gives people a handicap. Maybe other then one or two weapons....
