Just a question to administrators or even Bottiger himself.

How much does it cost to host a server? Does it differ between places and server types?

For example, let's say MONTHLY, how much would it cost to hold a Degroot 24/7 server in L.A.?

Is there any chance I, as a avid Skial server user, could subscribe a monthly amount of money to hold this server?

The price depends on the number of people, the location, the type of server, and the host. I used to rent a private server with 18 slots for I think $20 a month, but it's more if you want a public server, with more slots.

Skial used to have two Degroot Keep servers if I recall, one US and one EU. I'm sure you know why they were taken down...
I think Bottiger once said he doesn't want the servers to be too reliant on donators alone, and that if a server can't make enough money through ads to keep it alive, it's not worth keeping it up.

That's understandable, but time has gone by and the amount of Degroot servers (those also hosted by other communities) has gone down. The ones that are still around are always filled over half, (at least when I'm on). To be honest, that is the only time I feel reluctant to join another server, because as much as I want to play a Degroot map, I know skial does not have one. :(

Do you guys think that medieval mode on other maps are also fun? Would you like to try them out?

I tried pl_morriganalley, it's basiclly medieval payload. Though it's a nice map it did seem like one of those maps where it takes ages to complete.

Even if we had infinite money, we do not want to host everyone's favorite map that died. We do not want to have a bunch of servers that are empty for most of the day because it is bad for the player experience and people love complaining that we have too many servers even if every single one of them fills up for most of the day every single day.

And as repeated multiple times, people will say they will donate to keep a server alive single-handedly but they often get tired of the game at unexpected times or make ridiculous demands or they stop funding us. In our early years, we experienced this often and it is not something we want to see happen again.

Before we could promote variety just by having different maps up. We received enough new players to keep the less popular servers populated. But since Valve cut off the flow of new players to all communities, trying to do this is impossible.
