It could just be Sakurai's way of spiting the creators of PM since he has made it abundantly clear in the past that he doesn't think highly for competitive smashers, least of all the people who basically took brawl and made it more like melee.

He doesn't hate them necessarily, he just thinks a game with competitive elements will alienate casuals and will make the game not last as long. Which is fucking stupid because Melee was the best selling game on the gamecube, the competitive scene made it live longer.

Apex 2015 will be the biggest Melee tournament of all time, the first time Melee has hit the cap of 1024.
