rip skialpit

Unremarkable User
Skial had the only 24/7 Gravelpit server that was active every single day in the US and yesterday replaced it without warning with a Doomsday server, a map that has several 24/7 servers in the US. This just seems silly to me if the Gravelpit server isn't being moved.

There was quite a community that had gathered on the server and regulars would get it active and keep it filled up every day of the week. The game would be very good quite often as lots of very good players would go there, if Skial doesn't intend to move the server after taking it away without warning this will alienate all these people.

If it was a purely business decision then that won't be looked at very well because you had the only active server in the country that played a map and changed it to a map where it's quite easy to find several servers in the US.

There are even groups which show the community that Gpit server had, I can't link them being a new user but there's a Skialpit Steam Group and now a RIP Skialpit Steam Group which was made the same day the server was changed.

It's pretty messed up to just throw away such a dedicated community that got a server going everyday for a map that had no other active 24/7 servers in the US to replace it with a map that has multiple.

This suggestion has been implemented. Votes are no longer accepted.
Can it at least be examined of reinstating a Gravelpit server in place of an underperforming and expendable server in the future? There are possibly some duplicates that aren't truly necessary. It's just really a shame that the one active on a daily basis US gpit server is gone. It's a very fun map and if reinstated along with the dedicated members seeding we can try to spread the word since this is about saving US Gravelpit pub play.

And Doomsday certainly won't be replaced, it is the only map with the Special Delivery gametype so it naturally will stay closer to full than a capture points map from autoplay people. So far the replaced to be Doomsday server isn't even active for many more hours than Gravelpit was, and likely has had worse gameplay, it feels a bit unfair for Gravelpit existing on a daily active US server to be thrown away because a map is lucky enough to be the only map of a type. The server may have been in trouble but it seems clear that it had to go suddenly because Skial needed a Doomsday server, I think more of a chance should have been given to the server.

This has happened over and over again such as Badlands, Mountainlab, etc... People don't trust my judgement even after I've proved it countless times.

And the UGC No-spread, no-crit server that many (including me) championed. Bottiger spent some time developing the blacklist for that server, even though he predicted it to fail, which it did. He put it out there with everything we asked for in an attempt to make it work, but it didn't.

I have been around here for a little more than a year, and he has proven time and again that he knows his shit. At first I was like Doomsday over Gravelpit?? But goddammit right now Doomsday is full, and Badwater US is totally empty. Badwater US is almost always full, except now, but fuck me Doomsday is full.

I propose from now on, we just accept that Bottiger is right, and that server changes that we want go against his common sense. But sometimes he lets us try anyway.

I was never really saying that there shouldn't be a Doomsday server, obviously with its own gametype it will get a lot of autoplay people keeping it full. I was simply questioning getting rid of the Gravelpit server which I thought was pretty important. I should say that I haven't been an active member of these discussions so I don't know much about the past, I just play on Skial servers.

I do see though that it looks like the NY Doublecross server was changed to Gravelpit, which would be phenomenal if it is indeed being given a second chance. A couple things though, it's still set to 32 man which it probably shouldn't be because that prevents autoplay as far as I know and might mess with the balance of the map. And second, it doesn't really need the New York tag just as the old Gpit server eventually changed from Chicago to US.

Thank you though for giving Gravelpit another chance, things may start slow as we inform everybody about a new server but we will get the old community back there. I do think the 32 to 24 man change should happen soon though because that helps.

The server or possibly something else is causing me some pretty bad intermittent lags where it looks like it's going to disconnect but starts again after 5 or 10 seconds. But the 32 man thing is making seeding pretty hard especially.

edit: Looks like it is 24 now, thanks.

Thanks to Bottiger for creating a new Gravelpit. Having been a regular there for a few years, I'll say that I'm sure you're right that its days are numbered, but maybe it's too soon for the coup de grace. For me it's less about being the last Gravelpit server and more about the community that still exists there, so I really appreciate that you gave us somewhere to go.
