YummyWaffles

Scarcely Lethal Noob
Heyo Skial peoples.

I've got some questions for anyone that is interested. I've created my own alert tool from the steam API and made it into a website. I've been testing it out with my friends, but I need more gamers to try it out and get their opinions.

The site is OrbitAlerts.com, basically what it does is let you set up alerts to get text messages when your friends are in a game.

What I'm looking for from people is what they think, is it easy to sign up, are there features missing...that sorta thing.

Oh and its free. FYI.
My steam name: YummyWaffles if anyone wants to get in touch.

I guess it's a nice application but it's not really that usefull. I'll take a look into it later anyway and see how it is!

Why would someone want to get text messages when their friends join a game....

KillerZebra - I mainly wanted it because I am never at my computer, and so when one of my friends jumps into say TF2 or CS:GO, I would get a text message and then could jump in the game and play with them if I wanted to.

It's was mainly a way for me to be lazy...and not have to be at my computer. I typically don't like to play by myself, so with this I don't have to worry about when my friends will be online and playing.

HowIMetYourMother - I agree, it's a pretty specific tool. But if you have my problem its really handy.

Its like... hey i am not home but send me text message to let me know who goes online.... When i am home i have my computer on and i am playing. If i don't, then i don't want to play. Either way, i don't want to be getting constant text messages.

You do know there is an App for the Iphone. Its called Steam Mobile.

If, for some reason, i wanted to be on steam but not on my computer. I can just get my iphone and turn on steam and see who is online. Which is free btw.

I am not trying to sound like a dick or anything. But this app seems completely pointless and a waste of money...

The only thing I don't like about the Steam app is that it never tells you when someone goes online. I think the OP should work on an app for that instead. And make it free.

Nice! Thanks for the feedback. It tough because sending text's isn't free (otherwise I'd make it 100% free) I have to use a 3rd party company to do that. But that's good feedback.

You can always set up an email to text a phone. Which is completely free on your end

This is true, but i never use it for that purpose. I use it in case someone needs to get ahold of me or i want to buy something but not at my computer.

But you can easily spend 2 seconds to search for a friend on steam mobile

HOLY mojo!!!! I totally didn't know that, and I just looked it up. That is brilliant KillerZebra. BRILLLLIIIANT.

I do know some things lol. This will take a lot more coding to set up though. Judging by you making this though i don't see that being a problem.

I made something like this (emailing phone numbers) in one of my programming classes. I spent some time trying to figure out the best way to text phone numbers when i ran across this solution.

If this app was free than i wouldn't have a problem with it. I still wouldn't use it, but i wouldn't see any problem with it either. I would suggest you put up a donate button though, there is nothing wrong with that.

haha, yeah it's not for everyone. And I do have a free tier right now so people can try it out. But I'm going to look into the email option as well see what the draw backs are and what not, maybe that's a good alternative.

wouldnt it be easyer to have it connected to steam profile, and develop a phone app so it just pops up a notification when my friend play a game?

The idea would be easier, but making an app for it for it would take a lot more work i would think.

I am not sure about valve terms and agreements either. I am not sure if you need their permission to set up something like that. Since you are making an app to sign into steam, and use their features.

Well "easier" is relative. I'm more of a web guy, but yes I did think I could build out a mobile app with push notifications in the future. If this was a tool people liked and found useful.

yes that might be, or they will just take the idea [buy it perhaps] and implement it in the steam app for phones. still Yummy's idea is very good!

HEEEYYYoooo. Check it out everyone. Based on your feedback and a great tip from someone who will remain nameless *cough*killerzebra*cough*, I have made the site completely free. No more subscriptions or different plans. Just 1 account that you can set up as many alerts as you want with.

All you need is an email and password to get started.

So if anyone wants to give it a try I'd be mucho appreciative to get any feedback, or feature requests.

The feedback so far has been really helpful.
**oh here's the url again if you need it OrbitAlerts.com

I'm confused, does it just alert you when someone plays a game or when someone goes online as well?

So you only get alerts when a friend is actually in a game (not when they are "online").
It works like this.
  • Select a friend
  • Select the games you wanted to be notified for
  • Get alerts when said friend is in the game and actually playing

I'd still like to see a program that alerts me when any of my friends goes online.
