Somewhat Threatening Sniper
Not gonna beat around the bush, this is about 1 map. Now, I don't have a problem with the map I enjoy it quite often but it is the most polarizing map in the rotation by a wide margin and it has gotten worse recently. It encourages a different type of gameplay than any of the others and the coalition that loves it has been overwhelming the ones that hate it recently. I'm seeing frequent players just flat out leaving right after they get there when it comes up because they are so sick of it. One more cooldown period would give them some breathing room without a major change as few maps get voted again right off of cooldown. I present this as someone who does NOT hate the map, would never suggest removing it, so hopefully you take it with a little more credibility. I just want a more balanced experience for people on the server, and don't like seeing quality frequent players not coming around as much anymore because they are sick of one map.

I know, "democracy", "why don't people just vote for other maps" etc. Generally I agree with that 100%. In this specific case it's not like other map votes. It really is the 1 against the rest most of the time and the rest gets spread among 3-4 choices. It's going to still be a top 1 or 2 voted map, just a little more breathing room would be helpful.

An alternative solution, if it's possible, is to do a 50% threshold for map votes. If no map gets 50%, do a runoff vote of top 2. Then you have a TRUE democratic vote. No more 27% wins for a map that 50% slam their mouse when it wins. (happens a lot)

Another thing that would help diversify the map selections is to add new maps suggested particularly spaaaaace and livingroom remastered (ik spaaaaace isn't new, but it's new to me and would love to play it.). When maps are added they get a buzz on the server. Even nintendo was fun for a month and it's objectively awful, lol. I voted for it a lot for a while and now I never vote for it. Even bad new maps are fun while they are new. Adding/changing up new maps are important to keep the community interested but it seems to be low priority on the vsh server and it baffles me. Should be changed at least a little bit every season imo, perfect timeline. This rise in map selection imbalance could be the sign that the pool is getting stale. Adding rockslide and dirtmound back and removing shrine and reservoir would be good moves to change things up as well imo. Also, maybe let the top few players in the season rankings choose the next season's new maps from an approved pool. Give the rankings some tangible rewards.

the map pool has been stale for over a year and a half now, and as long as maps like military and cinema are in the map pool, that's never going to change because any new map that gets added has to compete with two of the most frequently played maps in the map pool. and just about every time, the new maps get removed a month later because they weren't "popular" (read: they couldn't compete with cinema/military)

rockslide was just another red damage farm map. and dirtmound_rc5a needs to have the secret room removed before it gets added back in. dirtmound_final is too bland and oversimplified to the point where there's no point in adding this version. shrine is probably staying in because of the FF2 community (why haven't you just split the map pools for the gamemodes already bottiger? there's literally 0 "compatibility issues" from doing this) reservoir would be saved if someone actually fixed the cap so that it actually works (same with dust showdown) but reservoir is also just a less flat dust_showdown with a different art theme to me.

No. people with high ranks don't need to be rewarded for sitting in a server for 7-10 hours a day for 3 whole months. (someone did challenge someone else to maintain rank 1 for 1 season and rewarded them with the most expensive elite-grade cosmetic, and near the end of it, it was just them killbinding at round start to avoid being kicked out by the AFK system, the person who issued the challenge found out about this, and as a result, lowered the reward they gave out. the current rank system for VSH is horrible and favors people with no life more than people who only spend 1-2 hours on the server, but are actually genuinely skilled at the game.) and letting the top 3-5 ranked players choose what map gets added into the pool for the next 3 months means we'll just see more bad maps entering the pool. you might see an interesting map or two, but no one in the VSH community wants to see turret testing come back.

the first time i played nintendo multimaps i was like "oh cool, another multimaps map where the map selection is horrible with only 1 decent map in it" the only "decent" one is kakariko village, and if i wanted to play kakariko village, i'd just suggest to add it into the map pool on the forums.

also by the end of the day, increasing nomination cooldowns from 3 > 4 won't do much since the effective map pool is basically 12. and on top of that, you can just RTV maps 4 minutes after getting in, so it wouldn't stop people from just RTV'ing back to their preferred rotation. increasing it from 3 > 6 or 3 > 8 might enforce some variety into what maps get voted for, but that'll probably never happen.

That's why I qualified it with "approved" pool. Believe me when I suggested that I was thinking of turret testing or grid walls getting added as well lol. There's a whole lot of decent maps out there that are as good or better than many that are currently in rotation. Since they don't just want a huge map list and keep it around a certain #, they can just keep a list people can pick from. Regardless, it will never happen so doesn't matter. 😄

That's the point, it's such a minor change that it might actually get implemented. But it helps in this case. On Sunday I swear cinema was over 30% of play time during active hours. It would put a lower ceiling on it at least. I would prefer 5 or 6 sure but that's up to them I'm just pointing out problem and solution suggestion. As far as RTV, you need over 50% so if that happens so be it. It's a much higher bar than map vote, extend. In fact I kind of prefer the run off/50% map vote idea. Or both.

Completely agree I thought the same thing, add Kakariko, remove multimaps if we need a nintendo one.
