The other option is to have it be run on a VPS, which range from $5-$10/mo depending on what the options are, etc.

I found a server that's $6.50/mo with:
4 CPU cores
3 gigs RAM
1TB bandwidth
1 Gbps uplink
Based in LA or in AZ (test 198.20.94.138). For me that's like 77ms average ping.
I can find other stuff, but it looks like anything decent will be around $7/mo.
 
IMO the most problematic factor is that half of us are on the East Coast and the other half is on the West Coast. Not saying and LA/AZ server would be horrible, but I'd probably be getting ping somewhere in between 125-175

I'm willing to chip in or even pay for it completely if we're 100% sure that we'll use it with fair regularity
