It will help keep your favorite servers populated. I don't think it is too much to ask for and you will be able to know which server to join to get the most AP out of your time.

and if you play on Skial, you should join the group to show your support anyway, not just for AP points.

There is only 1 event in the morning and 1 at night. They don't pop up again unless you keep relogging into Steam.
