So I didn't see a thread discussing this so here it is.

One of my co-workers brought up an interesting point as she is formerly from Ukraine. Putin may be captializing on the recent civil unrest to take a step forward in reuniting the Soviet Union (Or something similar in structure). Now, I am not familiar with recent Russian politics, but from what I've heard, Putin has gained significant power since being elected. I've also heard that he's quite the fan of doing things "the old way."

He created his own party http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People's_Front_for_Russia which shows he is probably a fairly strong idealist. Having an idealist in his position would lead to larger degrees of change, especially when he is backed by an existing large party http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Russia.

There's also this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putinism

What are people's thoughts on this? I know @PsychoRealm probably has a good opinion on this.

  1. Putin about USSR's collapse: "The collapse of the Soviet empire was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century”.
  2. Russian propaganda works exactly like Goebbels' propaganda back in 1938 - the idea of USA and West as world's evil has been seeded into Russian people's minds since 1945 and up until now. Right now in Russia you may observe unprecedented growth of patriotism and, sadly, full support of Putin's actions since everyone in Russia believes that Ukraine was about to be captured by the West. People also believe that Russian military forces are gonna kick Americans' ass should NATO or US Army intervene.
  3. Putin is doing the same shit Stalin was doing in 1930's - putting Russian Empire together;
  4. Russia really does not give a shit about what the rest of the world thinks about them - they are acting by principle "if it's allowed for USA, then we are allowed to do it too";
  5. What's happening in Ukraine right now is the exact copy of the events of 1938 when Hitler invaded Czech Republic stating that "Germans are in danger there", and allies (Triple Entente) were trying to solve all problems diplomatically;
  6. After Ukraine Russia won't stop. Its ambitions have outgrown all expectations.

From other articles I have read, I've peiced together that the (public) Western viewpoint is that we don't believe Russia can and will go much farther. If they do, they'll trigger sanctions which will kill Russia's economy unless China and Iran were to get overtly involved. Meaning - they would have to purposely support Russia's economy. Just because certain countries are friendly to Russia, does not mean they are their friends.

Actually, if I was China, I would let Russia fail fantastically, and then any pressure coming from the north would shrink dramatically, giving China virtually full control over eastern Asia. I'm almost certain they wouldn't like to see the rise of another USSR.

Nevertheless China is playing wishy-washy games claiming that whatever happens in Ukraine internally is Ukraine's own business and at the same time saying that situation in Crimea is not as clean as it seems. China doesn't want to go against USA, but in the same time they don't want to ruin their relationships with Russia.

In regards to "Russia can and will go much further" - I really hope it won't. Ukraine is not Georgia or Chechnya. Russians are gonna get some hard time and blood bath there. I'd prefer it not to happen.

It's all happening around the Black Sea, where Turkey is, who happens to be a member of NATO.
I don't know man, smaller things have escalated to great heights.

Yeah but as the article states, calling in NATO members on Article 4 is very rare. Poland has also been a watchdog against Russia for a long time. They tried to prevent the original USSR from rising and, in short, Poland motherfucking hates Russia.

We may very well see a new war breaking out in that region in the next couple of years. Whether the USSR comes back or not, the US and China better stay the hell out of it.

Well, I'm not the only one saying it since it sure as hell looks like history repeating.

By the way, adding Olympics to the equation, Olympic Games of 1936 were hosted by Germany in Berlin, 2 years later Hitler started the war. See the analogy? :)

Oh boy.

I think it is funny how Putin was a KGB spy during the Soviet Union and when he was running for president he even said he was in favor of reuniting another Soviet Union. A lot of people are actually surprised by his actions now.

It's because Russia isn't talked about enough in the US. The thing is that they are a threat if we don't pay attention to what they are doing. This is the result of complacency. I haven't really heard much of Russia for years until now in the news media.

Just a year ago or 2 years ago they found Russian spies living in America, and the vice president made a big joke about it, saying it wasn't his idea of sending her back to Russia because she was a model. Old Man Biden really know how to do it.
