Just my two cents, but I am actually quite saddened by the fact that authors like William Gibson get overlooked now. If you've not read The Sprawl Trilogy, at least pick up neuromancer. Or watch Blade Runner(Which yes, I know is Philip K Dick, but still an example of cyberpunk SciFi thats overlooked). Its legit.

I don't really think the Hunger Games should count. It's TECHNICALLY Sci-Fi but really doesn't feel like it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_contract
It's more about the social contract than anything else. The sci-fi is just kind of...in it. It exists, but it's not the focus of any of the books.

Especially since Mockingjay has them going "hurr durr have these fancy bows instead of the many fancy guns we have, and take down hovercrafts with exploding arrows instead of the machine gun nest that we have right there YEAH KATNISS bows rock!"
Sheesh. It's worse than when writers try make Hawkeye relevant when they've already got Iron Man, invincible green monster and a Norse god on their team.

It's also relatively new as well. The book is only 6 yrs. old. Not the best representation for the sci-fi bible imo.
In the same token, really none of the listed SciFi would be counted either. As much as I hate to admit it, but most of these just end up as a pop culture segment for us, rather than really legitimizing an originating source of the genre. At that point, it'd just cut the list down to 1 person thats already up there, H.G Wells.(adding others are arguable, but aside from the obvious tincture of Mary Shelley and Jules Verne, I could see Wells' influence on others later down the line.)

My opinion, if the SciFi backdrop in Hunger Games warrant it enough to be declared a SciFi novel, and thereby included as a jumping point for SciFi, why not let it in. Its not like we are all going to become literature professors and have to debate how Verne's backdrop of Moby Dick in a tin can called 20'000 leagues could stand as moral and judicial dictates as the judeochristian bible =)

I apologise for putting it this way...but this poll is shit. Sorry again.
No Jules Verne, no H.G. Wells' Invisible Man/the Time Machine, no Asimov's Foundation series, not even Asimov's Robot series (The Caves of Steel is a classic), no Fahrenheit 451, no Philip K. Dick, no William Gibson (Neuromancer), no Robert Heinlein, no 2001: A Space Odyssey, and no Kurt Vonnegut.
You seriously included FUCKIN' HUNGER GAMES but not the Foundation series? Goddamn...
Anyway, I nominate Asimov's Second Foundation as the bible of Science-Fiction.

This is exactly why it shouldn't be on there. How can you be a bible of Sci Fi when the Sci Fi takes a back seat?

Gentlemen, I appreciate your input why did you guys bump this? I said I accidentally hit post instead of new response and I would have gone over the possible responses, would have redone them. Butt-smelly hunger games was considered Sci-Fi and had like 10 million copies sold, and I know A lot of dweebs who like it, (especially since the second film came out)

I like Sci-Fi, and its Awesome you guys like Sci-Fi. If I could, I'd totally remake this thread.

In fact, I highly recommend one of you to make a new Bible of Sci-Fi thread.

Only because, like Wingman said, it wasn't completely thought over and mostly spawned by a want to discuss SciFi. If the only reference point people had to SciFi as a genre was The Hunger Games, and as such wanted to mention it, I'd rather take the opportunity to discuss its failing points and recommend some of the influencing literature as a counterpoint.

That being said, There isn't as far as I've searched so far, a thread dedicated to discussing literature in one shape and form, so why not have taken the meager advantage of over statement to start dredging that conversation up =) This poll wouldn't be so bad a hash point if it gets taken in that direction, no?

I am a huge Star Wars fan. Having Hunger Games on the list but not Star Trek? Seems odd imho. Would also mention the Alien series, The Matrix and Close Encounters to name a few.

Because this one works fine for discussing, poll fail or not. No sense making another one for a poll that can have only 10 options.
Unless based mods would give us a general sci-fi sticky.

You can only have 10 poll questions? How can I fit a centuries work of literature in that? :O DUNE'S THE BEST ANYWAY!
Forgot what I said. I just had major da-javu. Continue more about Sci-Fi please : D

Chime in here, maybe we can find something more suitable for us, rather then being limited by 10 questions =)

I agree Dune is awesome. So many choices with the amount of sci fi that has been made. Maybe have people give a list of top 5 or 10 that they found to be outstanding. The best thing about getting others input on this is that they will throw something in the mix that you may not have seen or have forgot. Hell you could throw Godzilla, King Kong or Sharknado :P in the mix.
