My son got hacked somehow, I can only think of he ended up using a bot to get a free copy of dota, (for some reason he now has 5 copies in his invent :S ) anyway, not sure of the route used to get access, but be wary of automated bots giving out dota.

So, they used a card on file to purchase a shit load of keys - they ended up spending ~£400 (~$600) before teh bank started asking questions, they could have gone on if teh bank hadn't been dilligent and would have stripped the account of £60k.

It's been reported to steam, and the bank are investigating, they are after the ip address of the fraudster, which i'm not sure if steam will give, or be able to get due to proxys probably being used.

This is the account used to transfer the keys to initialy

I'm going to do what investigating I can from my end, but hoped xelnaga could do the honours and get as much info for me as possible, and mark him on sr.

This is my sons account that was compromised http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198024775665/

this is why I always feel uneasy buying keys from people cheaper than the Mann Co. store because this might where they're coming from

I don't quite understand how trading with a bot could compromise his account, as long as the 'bot' didn't ask for his personal information. Those copies could have been given to him by Valve, in their random give outs (I got like twenty of those..)

This feels a bit more like a keylogger that has infected his computer, and the hacker could then steal his account. Or social engineering on your son that made him give away his personal information. Either way, search the computer and eliminate any potential threat if it was a keylogger.

And as a precaution if this was because of the bot, if anybody still wants a Dota 2 key, please use this bot. It's well known, the biggest one currently and I personally only got good experience with using it.

I thought you were going to blame Skial for a second. Seems to be the popular thing people are doing these days

Yeah, I know, but after trying to find the cause, this is the only thing that he has done other than play games... so I dunno.. he got hit before with the free fifa 11 scam on xbox, they spent £200 that time, so he soon found out the perils of giving away info. It's definitely something to do with steam, but as for what.. that will probably never come to light. scanned teh pc, nothing showed. all passwords have been changed, card is removed from teh system, so It's justa case of waiting on steam.. one good thing is teh money is only 'earmarked' to go out of the bank, meaning steam havent claimed it yet, so its most likely that we will have no cash losses.

Yo do know there is nothing Xel can do? You provided no proof of any trades or anything. You just said "hey this guy hacked my son mark him"

Also, that account you linked us too isn't even a bot. It can't be since is has a VAC ban.

As far as i know there is no way your information can be stolen through a trade. If there was a way it would be all over the steam forums and stuff. I am going to assume your son clicked on something and entered in his information again. It might of been from that account, but we don't know since you didn't give us anything to go on.

Your son even has DOTA2, so why would he want more free copies of it? That doesn't seem logical at all.

You might want to do some virus scans and tell your son to stop clicking on things and to stop giving out his information. Because the only thing i can think of is that he got phished by someone. They got access to the account, found the billing information and used it.

Well thanks for that.. It would have been just easier to say "maybe provide some more info" do you not think after me saying he got hacked before that he learned his lesson about giving out info and he assures me that he hasnt entered his account info anywhere. I didnt say that was the account that was the bot, i said it was the account the keys were traded to. I also said that he had 5 copies of dota appear in his inv, which is weird and yes, he told me the only thing (apart from playing games) was that he got the game from a bot. and I did mention that I had scanned the pc, removed the card. And what I mainly asked was if xelnaga could do some investigating, as I know he has a way of navigating around these sorts of things through his experience and maybe could find something useful. marking on sr is not going to sort anything out, and tbh I don't give a shit about this as it mainly deals with trading scammers not cyber criminals, and just lets people know to not trade with someone, it doesnt stop someone making another alt and doing the same shit.

Just got an email saying the cash has been refunded.

Thats good at least.

Unless xel has something that i dont have i dont think there is anything he is able to find. Did you show all of this to Valve? I think they are the only ones that can do something, not us. $600 is a big deal.

For the future i would suggest keeping a close eye on your son. And to not link your credit cards on any of his accounts from now on. It just looks like he got phished. (assuming he telling the truth when he said he never gave out information)

There isn't much I can look at, I'm certain Faron and Xel'Naga have access to better queries and possibly an analytics they can use.

Account was created sometime on March 20th, 2010, based out of Europe. First name change took place on December. VAC Ban was initiated *supposedly* on May, 3rd, 2012, but no sooner than July 7th, 2010.

Do you know the site your son supposedly visited to trade a bot?

Edit: Oh nice, they finally clamped down on it, glad to hear Steam was able to pull through for you. :3

I am moving this out of the reports. This isn't a skial issue so there is nothing that we can do here. If you want Xel to look into it pm him and/or link him to this thread. But idk what Xel can even do.

Maybe you can send us a link to the item history on a few of the keys

Been through this before, though not as much money as you were hacked for. That really sucks, but I am glad you got your money back so quickly.

I believe he never gave out any info, or at least he didn't realise he did.. but at the end of the day it could happen to any of us, and has happened to many and is a major problem.. If my post at least gets one person to be more aware of things, and avoid the same shit, then it has served a purpose..
Valve have been informed, but you feel helpless with just a support ticket pending, at least they sorted it out and could see it was a blatant theft.
The card was not supposed to be linked to his account, he is such a little git though, he saved it and for that he has been spoken to. and everyone should not link their card, just enter the details everytime you use it.
Yeah it is a large chunk of cash, even though the account has a substantial amount in it, it's more than I earn in a week. and if they could have they would have stripped the lot, that would at least have been better, because that would have invoked a greater investigation internationaly.
The worse part of it all is that you have no way of getting to these assholes that perform such acts. If it was in rl (as in a mugging or alike), one could at least hunt the bastard down and give him a good pasting. Even if I found out the guys address, I wouldnt be traveling to China or Russia to deal with it, so the sad part is these people do get away with it.

the scammer linking the steamconmunity link has been hasseling people again, that's most likely how your son got jacked.

recently i got 5 more copies of dota that i gave away, so odds are that isn't to root of the problem.

If you wanna PM me the Steam Support ticket info (screenshots), and trade history screenshots from the Steam browser, I'll log it, keep it private, and be able to use that to tag the guy who jacked your keys.
