Odd, I had this idea in my head for a long time now.
I'm not sure who said this but I do believe in it
"It is not God who created man, it is man who created God"
God is simply an outlet to help answer some problems we can never prove.
Ah well I basically just said the same in a way longer text haha. Screw myself. When I started writing I didn't see your post x(

I've only read the first page.

BUT GOOD GOD, but the frequent posters represent the entire spectrum of stupidity!

So at first glance this seems like an "AMERICA IS STOOPID FOR BELIEVIN IN WHITE JEEBUS FUCKIN AMERICUNTS". Other than that, I don't really see a point in this thread as of yet. Let me make one.

Instead of questioning what people believe in, wouldn't it be more interesting to ask why? (And not just blatantly call it stupidity.)

Why are people so willing to commit themselves to a sky diety? Why are so many people willing to kill for it? What are the pyschological aspects involved with religious worship, and how can it be askewed to produce societal abnormalities such as cults and scientology?

I move to change the flow of the topic to this rather than "lol Americunts", I do have fleeting pride for my country, and don't appreciate the majority of them whitewashed into "they r jus stoopid lol" argument.

Aren't you supposed to be on Sand Planet fighting the Sand People?

OH, and I +1 this topic-shift.

I tried to give an answer to the why in one of my previous posts. Basically people people in God because they either fear something or because they can't explain something and they feel safer if they have an explaintion for it. So humans created many Gods over the time. Now in Christianity is just one left but it's basically the same as it was in the ancient Greek mythology.

Have you studied the idea of Intelligent Design (ID in my future posts on this thread)? ID tries to explains everything with God. That's pretty funny I think. Also most ID supporters believe that the earth is 10000 years old. As scientific facts have proven it's many billion years older.
I don't think you quite get the idea of "ID". The "inteligent part is referring to the basis of science. The world and universe were made under rules. Most people who believe in ID believe in evolution and carbon dating, which is the basis of the Earth being many billions of years old. The "design" part refers to a creator, a god. He made the world to incorporate these rules. He made evolution happen, incorporated it into the system. This means that the Earth can be many billions of years old without going against these other people's beliefs. Most people who are ID believers do not take the bible seriously, but only sections of it.

As for why, Badguy, there are many practical reasons for religion. It promotes community development, discourages crime, and provides relief in times of stress or sadness.
True, it has started wars, but wars start over everything. Over land, religion, money, even women.

Harkonens gave me a month to wait, goin to Arakis soon, THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED, ect.

but there in lies another good question. Why has our perspective of God changed from a humanistic outlook to a more omnipotent one? Its easy to say why a multitude of gods no longer exist, humanity always tries to simplify the solution to the best of our ability, so I won't go into that. But the visage of an all knowing God plays to that of a role of a parent. The solution to all a childs problems. And some people need that security to go about their daily lives. The universe itself and its understanding is, regrettably, out of this generations grasp. Man takes solace in that he understands, and fears the unknown, to steal an idea from that god awful NWO misinformist shitfest that is Zeitgeist, man has a fear of the unknown, the dark, since within it looms most certainly death. While the life giving sun gives us clarity and understanding of our world. Our primal fear of the unknown is biologically written into us today and our passion for understanding drives us. But man wants the simple solution, why overburden an answer in a broken and complex form? Perhaps man's concept of God is that ultimate solution, but we are beyond the imagination or concept to fully understand it at this point in time. God has evolved from a grouping of animalistic, primal dieties to the ideas of Order and Chaos, and a balance falling between the two.

I think you really need to make research on what ID actually is. I studied ID and am pretty sure I know what I'm talking about.
Have a look at these sites
http://www.talkorigins.org/
http://ncse.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwards_v._Aguillard (Court case)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligent_design
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_A._Dembski (major proponent of ID who wrote also a ton of books about it)

If you want to read two good books about this matter then I can suggest you:
Why Intelligent Design Fails by Matt Young & Taner Edis
Of Pandas and People by Parcival & Kenyon Davis (former US schoool science book, former because ID is not a science)

Some other funny sources that have more to do with people believing in ID and Creationism

Pretty much all I've read so far is Del Piero all:

with the occasional voice of reason to kill this thread or change its path.

Fucking A guys, if you think it's boring don't fucking read it and stay out of the thread. Personally I think that if more people actually understood quantum mechanics things like evolution would be a lot easier to accept. The problem is that many things we have discovered through scientific inquiry go against what common sense would tell us. Just as common sense tells us that a particle couldn't possibly be in two different places simultaneously it also tells us that the idea that we are descended from monkey-like creatures is ridiculous. As CompassCall (and others) pointed out the attributes we assign our deities has shrunk over time as our understanding has increased. Now the main reason we still have religion at all is the relatively counter intuitive nature of much of modern science combined with a hefty dose of social conditioning. To me the thought of finding comfort in an imaginary friend in the sky is completely ludicrous, but the fact that so many people do indicates something to me about the people around me.

I am reminded of the experiments on obedience conducted by Stanley Milgram (sp.), he was motivated by the atrocities committed by Germans and other nationalities under Nazi rule to see if there was something intrinsically more obedient about he people from that region of the world. What he found was that everywhere he did his experiment people were willing to do things most people would never consider if an authority figure told them to. He hypothesized that our psychology is such that we want to be led, to have an authority figure tell us what we should do, what is right, and what is wrong. Our brains are naturally lazy, we don't want to have to work out what is right and wrong, we want to be told. This makes sense from an evolutionary perspective as well. Humans that are docile and easily led by one or two powerful figures are much more likely to act as a cohesive unit and maximize the race's chances of survival.

Eh I don't think it's boring, I was simply saying that the path the thread has taken seems more childish than constructive discussion. That's all.

Any topic that is a bit more serious gets trolled right away by the same bunch of idiots. Good job trolls
