Scarcely Lethal Noob
Hi everyone, I was just wondering if you guys have any tips on how I could get better as scout. I usually find it hard and difficult to fire on enemy scouts or try to engage enemies for I take damage easily and I literally suck at aiming. Many tips are appreciated :) .

Well, I don't really play Scout but I can tell you already that you're gonna have to get better at aiming if you want to be good. How bad would you say you are with your aim?
You're fast, so you can outrun enemies and get away if you think you're being overwhelmed. There's no shame in running away, y'know.

There are servers called MGE where you can train against other people. They have specifically designed maps for training and you can just ask the other person to switch to the class you want to go against.

But another thing to keep in mind is practice and patience. Like how I spent 30 minutes trying to get past the 2nd level in a Soldier Training Jump Map, but Scout is one of the hardest classes to aim with.

Well, you can risk your life for a short period for the team by using bonk and then getting an enemy lvl 3 sentry to lock onto you. While invincible and occupying the sentry, teammates can then attack said sentry without risking their own lives. Theres a 50-50 chance that around the end of this process Bonk will wear off and the sentry, on the verge of death, will kill you.

Ok, I see, thanks for all the tips! As for running away, I sometimes engage other scouts and it gets hard to run D:

If your aim's as bad as mine, just try to strafe. Don't try attacking groups, just pick off stragglers like a spy, demo, medic, maybe an engie if you're already behind their nest. Sandman stun them or, if you can, get behind them. You've got a lot more time to pull off a meatshot or two when the enemy's spinning around trying to find you.

A good loadout for the Scout is:
-Scattergun
-Mad Milk
-Holy Mackeral

You can be brought back from the brink of death with the Mad Milk. Tossing it on someone slow, unaware, or just plain Australian and then getting a good shot in with the Scattergun brings back some serious HP.

The Holy Mackeral is a good spychecking/emotionally deteriorating weapon. I've actually seen people ragequit after getting dominated by the Mackeral, and as far as spychecking goes the Mad Milk/Mackeral combo is real good.

General tips would be to never stop moving and JUMP. Crouch-jump while in the air and your hitbox will be smaller, and you will take less damage. And don't try to 1v1 heavies as a new scout. You will fail. Terribly.

I just recently been playing a lot of scout and a good weapons I found for scout is the atomizer while the item itself is not so good the mere fact you gets a third at the cost of 10 hp means a

lot. If timed right the third jump usually throws off most people aim since they were not expecting that third jump and have already predicted where you are gonna land. Not saying spam triple

jump in every engagement but when used at the right time can save your ass from getting killed by that one rocket, sticky, or pipe, or you jump over a heavy who has already spun around to

meet but nope jump back in the air before he/she realizes, It just help make you harder to track.

Also my loadout is: Scatter, madmilk-bonk-pistol, atomizer

MGE 4 dayz to work on hit scan also practice rocket dodging as well as pill and pipe dodging goal as scout should be to stay alive for as long as possible while cleaning up kills on low health players

To get better play with me :D

But for real as a Scout you want to be fast. Always keep moving and play smart. for example if you are fighting a heavy always move around, jump and run around him (make sure not to go let your cross hairs go from the target) and always shoot while your doing this. Don't do a dumb move and jump in front of the line of fire and don't to close to Soldiers because they might shoot your feet and you might not be so lucky. Also flank a lot as Scout.

The best way to get better is to just play it all the time honestly, always try to stay alive.

so, if you find that you're aiming for something and you mose too far past them you should consider lowering your sensitivity.
If you're aiming for something and it seems like you can't ever get your cursor on them then you need to raise your sensitivity.

Bopper on scout i think plays with like 16 inches to a 360 degree turn in game.
Another guy i know plays with like, the biggest mousepad in the world and a bind to turn at 46inches per 360
i think swab is at 22inches per 360?

snipers and scouts and spies on revolver all benefit tremendously from lower sensitivities.

I play scout competitively. I'll point some things out

Initally, try focusing on having really good aim and hitting every single shot you fire. If you have trouble aiming with scout i'd advise turning off mouse acceleration and checking raw input from the mouse settings in game. You can also lower your sensitivity as it will give you a wider range of margin for error when aiming. I personally use 9" for a 360 turn in game but you may be comfortable with 1"/360 - 4"/360. Make sure you turn on "play a hit sound every-time a injure an enemy" and "display damage done over the enemies head" from advanced options.

A close range scattergun shot does 104 damage, while far away it does 3 damage. Pistol is 22 damage per shot up close and 8 damage far away.

When engaging scouts with good aim it is dangerous to jump and most scout fights are pretty equal. You should install the null-cancelling movement script in the guide for scouts above and press A + D to strafe to the left and right to dodge the other scout while trying to hit him.

When engaging soldiers try to use the environment of the map to your advantage, try to keep high ground by using crates/rocks/stairs etc. Pester him with mid range shots and go in for a "meatshot" (100dmg) if it is safe. Try and make him waste his 4 rockets on you before going too close. Use your double jump on and off of crates, if the solider hits you, you can strafe in the air, land of something and continue engaging him. Engaging demomen is similar but easier you might not even have to use high ground depending on the skill of the demoman.

When engaging heavies you want to catch them by surprise, if they are spun up and looking at you then they will probably kill you. Try to use a flank and get close to the heavy without him seeing you and deal 3 or more meashots. If he turns around try rounding around him while shooting or using scout vs scout tactics with wider strafing angles.

When engaging pyros you have two options. One to run backwards and to hit him with mid range shots, second go in next to the pyro to deal 2 meatshots then get a health pack. If a pyro airblasts you into the air, you can use your double jump to have advanced airbourne movement and can engage him similarly to a solider.

Other classes are quite easy to deal with, you just have to remember how much health they have, how much health you have and how much damage you can do to them.

I think the only way to get better at a class would be practicing it, you can't expect to get good overnight, so you need to stay dedicated to it if you really want to get good at it.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your help. Also, any tips on maps like gorge/dust bowl where when you engage, there may be a lot of stray fire or like its a one way entrance and they're sentries, soldiers, demos, and heavies all firing at your team who is trying to get by?

Can't wait till Thursday for more free weapons! I am working hard on getting a fast learner. Any tips to also get refined metal faster and the price of the fast learner would be appreciated! THANK YOU
