I was just wondering if this happens to anyone else.
Whenever I log into steam it says Im on-line which is fine but as soon as I start playing a game, TF2 Portal etc.. its says I'm in the game.. still fine. When I finish, however and close the game, steam still says I am in said game... I have no idea how to fix this. Should I try re installing steam all together or?

I get this occasionally, the above does not work from my experience, since the process is already terminated.

yeah exactly, It also keeps me from going into the game again after I turn it off the first time. I need to restart my computer entirely again just to resume playing. : /

I have the same here. I would try to fix it but it's not really a problem for me... maybe because I don't have many friends on steam. I dunno, I will check that as soon as I'll be closing TF2. I'll be back with a fix if I found one.

slightly better then rebooting your system couldnt you just close out steam?

OK, I did a fast check, would try better later. Anyways, this is what I got:

When closing TF2 (didn't tried other game), can't exit steam, message that tf2 is still running but no "hl2.exe" running... Search for a process called "conime.exe" and shut it down.

Let me know if solved!.

sometimes I resort to doing that but I mean there's got to be an easier way... none of my friends comps do that to them when using steam.

I'd use Styx's suggestion and shut down the process tree for Steam entirely, as well as any steam games that might be running. You might also be short on memory so a warm reboot afterwards might be helpful. I hit this snag every now and then where the computer forgets to close out steam or a steam game and then thinks you want to run the game twice. Usually this fixes it.

It's not hl2.exe that you need to kill. It's gameoverlay.exe.

gameoverlay.exe is the process that lets you use the Steam Overlay while in-game. It's SUPPOSED to kill itself when hl2.exe is killed, but it doesn't always do it. This will send a signal to Steam.exe telling it that you're still in-game, even though you aren't. Also, it'll use up a decent chunk of RAM by still running in the background. Kill gameoverlay.exe and you should be fine.

I'll give it a try, thanks!

Update that:

I can only recreate this exact behaviour when using under sandboxie with another steam folder in a different location, not the default install. Only then the "conime.exe" appears. Running my default install is not showing the "conime.exe" proccess anywhere.

Which is odd because when I close the conime.exe, a window steam promos pops up.

EDIT: As soon as I posted this I readed Xel'Naga's post... "gameoverlay.exe" make sense to me, I don't know why it would work with "conime.exe" too, but it does to me. I will try "gameoverlay.exe" next time, as long as it doesn't close whole Steam down, I could use that.

Update to EDIT: Guess what?... I don't have "gameoverlay.exe" process running, only "conime.exe". Weird.

Problem resolved for you Gary, because I've been having this problem, and killing gameoverlay.exe worked. Still wish Steam would launch Minecraft via Steam Shortcut again, so I don't get invited to games because people can't see i'm in-game on Minecraft. Any way to solve that one, boys?

Add Minecraft.exe as a non-Steam game to your Steam library. You may also need to add minecraft.jar as a backup, because I think once minecraft.exe is just the launcher, while minecraft.jar is the actual game, itself.
