So that 8.1 update has been available for a while. I haven't downloaded it because of the mouse lag problems, but they might be fixed now (would like some confirmation on that).

You might as well update, though. I haven't looked into it but I imagine it's just a bunch of fixes, security updates, etc.

You could do an image backup of your hard drive and then upgrade to 8.1. If it doesn't work out, just restore the backup. The best advice I can give you, though, is to upgrade to Windows 7.
