Right now it is the most played Steam game beating the next few competitors by several times. Currently it has almost 290,000 players logged on consecutively, while the nearest game, TF2, has 60,000.

All of sudden the items in Dota 2 are also worth a lot, with many items easily in the hundreds of dollars on the marketplace.

How did this happen?

DOTA 2's been on the top for a while now, I can't remember when I noticed it but on the Stats, people are playing more and more DOTA 2 versus TF2, ever since it launched and the invites cropped up, it's been the hot game as of late.

Wow Bottiger, it's amazing that TF2 manages to remain somewhat steady while DOTA 2 skyrocketed. o.O

Tempted to launch the game, I got an invite early before it went public...still sitting there in my Library. D:

They're two completely different games that appeal to two completely different player bases. DoTA 2 killing TF2 would be like Call of Duty trying to migrate World of Warcraft players to their game.

Tell it to the random empty servers I'm finding...and the list of friends that are playing more and more DOTA 2 than anything.

Shoot, I started playing Delta Force over TF2...it's not about killing it, it's about what people are playing and what's popular. DOTA 2 spread like aids.
