There's a bug going around causing hales to become completely invisible to some players requiring them to reinstall the models to fix it

It's a very common thing, people are asking about it on a daily basis.

My suggestion is to add one of those automatic server chat message (similar to the no advertising hacks message) that posts every so often saying how to fix it or linking to this https://www.skial.com/threads/vs-saxton-hale-invisible-models-fix.59318/

Or just something to point them to where they can fix it. It's a pretty common issue

Invisible models or error models. My models are just big red "error" text and I reinstalled everything but cannot fix it. Which problem are you talking about or are they one and the same.

This one causes hales to become completely invisible, no big red 'error' text

I'm not sure whats with your issue tho. I haven't heard of that happening in a long time. Try reconnecting to other VSH servers maybe, I heard that fixed it for someone awhile back, not sure if it would fix yours tho

Bit naive here as to whether this is feasible, but can the model(s) be stored on the server, so downloads when connecting? Will it overwrite the old model files?

I remember that bug from ages ago, damned if I can remember what it was, do you allow downloads from servers? could it be a missing file or texture.

Yeah, I was just thinking that might be the problem. I do have it turned off. I will try and turn on download models.

If the player is missing the necessary VSH stuff it'll be automatically downloaded from the server. It'll download and work fine one day, but later down the road they'll randomly stop working for some people.

That's probably why, if you have your downloads off it will cause issues like that

Even though this won't solve the problem completely, +1. It's better than nothing. At least one person a day has this problem on the VSH server and a lot of people say its only when they try to connect to Skial's VSH server. On other VSH servers it's fine for them.

I don't think we need to litter the server with messages like that. If the model is invisible it is because they disabled downloads, so it will be broken on every server.

Your thread hurts more than it helps because it encourages people to leave downloads disabled and when there is a new model, they will run into the same problem.

I thought this was a VSH related bug so I stand corrected on that. I'll make sure to tell people to enable their downloads

But wouldn't a simple "Invisible hale models? Type cl_downloadfilter all into the console and reconnect." sent every 5-10 minutes be well worth the amount of players it could help retain?

If you don't want to do it then I understand and I'll shut up. Just making a last ditch effort here since I hate to see people leaving the server due to it.

I know this was declined, but I feel that Meow's points are valid and I'd like to +1 anyways.

if that's truly the case, Valve needs to fix the "Do not download custom sounds" option so models and textures (not map embedded) will still download

For the record here, I think this is a problem deeper than download settings.

@Bottiger

Apologies for bugging you, but if you do read this, I noticed something odd when trying to help people fix their stuff. People who have their download filters allowing all server downloads still have this issue

First player (MagnumSphere)
- Download filter has always been set to "Allow all custom files from server"
- Had invisible hale models twice in a row
- Problem only resolved when manually installing the models

Second player (Samin)
- Download filter set to "Allow all custom files from server"
- Had invisible hales once
- Problem only resolved when he manually reinstalled the files

Third player (Pixelated R.R.Shot)
- Download filter set to allow all custom files from server
- Models were working perfectly fine one day, joined the server, models became invisible until manually reinstalled
- Custom models and files work for him on all other servers with no issues

I too have had a similar problem where a couple of the hale models remained invisible for me until I reinstalled the models. My download filters have always been set to allow all server downloads.

Just wanted to put this out here for the record.

You have to keep in mind we probably have thousands of saxton hale players, and most of them, myself included, have never had to manually download those files.

I just don't think this is a widespread enough problem and the solution you present isn't even a real solution. It only works for 1 version of saxton hale, and it stops people from trying to figure out how to fix their downloads.

If someone has an unusual problem they should spend a little effort to try and figure out how to fix it. I think we have enough chat ads as it is now and people barely pay attention to them because there are so many of them.

I looked at the FAQ on the AlliedMods thread. possible server-side issues, however unlikely, are:
  • using sv_pure 2, or 1 with an incorrect whitelist (make sure to whitelist the VSH files)
  • using sv_downloadurl (a fastdownload server) and haven't placed the bz2 files onto your fastdownload server
  • substituting the actual models and sounds (on the server, not the fastdownload) for their bz2 replacements (which will fail horrendously)

I also recall reading somewhere (can't remember where) that one method for TF2 to download model files simply doesn't work anymore

sv_pure is 0, and the bz2 files are there, you can try deleting your saxton hale files and it will redownload. The models would be broken for everyone if you didn't have them on the server.

tried it. for some reason, the .VTX files for the models didn't download, which results in Hale being invisible

the .PHY and .VVD files didn't download either but after extensive testing, they were unrelated to the issue at hand

I might have found the problem. The version of saxton hale updated by chdata has a bug in it where it assumes the location of the models is in the root directory instead of possibly being in the custom directory.

We have always had people complaining about invisible hales, and I personally deleted the files on my computer to see if they would re-download before and they did. But this was before we upgraded to chdata's version.

But anyway this is why it is better to focus on the real problem instead of a hacky workaround.
