I've calculated that I've already spent about $300 just in buying keys to unbox, and never have unboxed an unusual.
Now that I do have an unusual, I'm considering selling it for a few keys to open more boxes.

It really depends on how many keys your unusual is worth and if you accept the fact that you probably wont get anything . But, I think you should do it. Probability favors the daring and odds are that your unusual will be worth more than the investment.

Well, the hat is a orbiting fire Stately Steel Toe, so it's not worth as much as I originally thought it was
