To whom it may concern.

I have a quick little issue here. I really badly want to play with the TF2: Tron Mod again, but I've downloaded 3 different files from 3 different sites, and extracted them all in a butt load of places in my tf2 files.

http://tf2.gamebanana.com/skins/116378
http://tf2.gamebanana.com/skins/119821
http://tf2tron.blogspot.com/

After a copious amount of trial and error, and restarting my TF2, I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here I don't know about. Can someone help me install one of these correctly :/ I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Cordially

It's a new tutorial for SteamPipe

  1. Download the mod that you want
  2. Extract it with 7zip or winRAR
  3. Take your files, and place them inside
Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\custom\.

If you don't have any of the folders listed, make them yourself(right-click>create new folder)

It should be a .vpk file that you put in there. However, some older mods aren't in vpk, so go to steam\steamapps\common\team fortress\bin\vpk and use that application to turn your folder into a .vpk. The folder that you convert should be a file with "materials,models,and/or sound" folders in it

Seems like sv_pure server CVAR can disable custom skins.
Is it set to 1 by default on skial?

Try reading this one too.
http://tf2.gamebanana.com/tuts/11237

E// changed to a steampipe tut instead.

Hope this helps. :)

For example, you might have the following file structure:

tf/custom/my_custom_stuff/ <<< This subfolder will be added as a search path
tf/custom/my_custom_stuff/models/custom_model.mdl
tf/custom/my_custom_stuff/materials/custom_material.vmt
tf/custom/my_custom_stuff/materials/vgui/custom_ui_thing.res
tf/custom/some_mod.vpk <<< This VPK will be added as a search path
tf/custom/another_mod.vpk <<< This VPK will be added as a search path
Note that the following directory structure is NOT correct:

tf/custom/models/my_model.mdl

That will add the directory "tf/custom/models" as a search path, in which case the
file my_model.mdl actually exists at the root of the game's virtual filesystem.
Instead, you would use something like:

tf/custom/my_custom_stuff/models/my_model.mdl
The model packs aren't broken.
Read the readme before asking silly questions.

Oh yeah! That might be the problem. :O
Classic example of blindly whacking at a nail. I had no idea.

First locate vpk.exe it should be located here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Team Fortress 2\bin.

Next you'll want to make yourself a shortcut on your desktop.

Step Two, you'll want to make sure you have your files in this order: \tf\custom\Your skin or textures\. Put your materials, models and the lot in there.

For the last step you'll want to take your folder, whatever it's called and drag and drop it on top of your vpk.exe shortcut, it will be a vpk now like in picture 2. After you're done with that, just drop the vpk in to tf\custom.

But from what I know it should be placed in tf/custom. Also this is 51% wrong but try creating a new folder in /tf/custom and placing the mod in there

/tf/custom/[your folder]

idk :/

As mod already said you need a folder in custom called "my_custom_stuff", won't work otherwise. Doesn't need to be packed into a vpk file.

Apparently it wasn't clear enough.
Loose files: tf \ custom\ [any folder name] \ [whatever you would normally put in the tf folder]
VPKs: tf \ custom\ [vpk name here].vpk

I tried all this. D: It's not working! Does it help to say that the giant TF2 conversion (came out in sometime in May, 2012) removed the Tron Skins? These models came out in 2011, does that play a difference? (I can't find any tron mods that were made later then that :x )
