I'll be honest - that's the question I've asked myself multiple times. I'd love to know the answer too.
There's only one way keys are created in the game (http://i.imgur.com/R9zEe.png), somebody paid $2.49 to every single one of them in existence. There are people like op though who don't know about sourceop, but they won't last forever, they either find the site sooner or later or buy every item they need and stop getting keys from there.

It's hard to believe that people are buying keys for $2.50 just to sell them later for $1.50
I mean, where is the profit?

???

People buy keys from store to trade for items, hats or promos they like. Whoever got the keys in exchange sells them for reduced price to get rid of them. They were pretty stable at $2, to get the people buy from them instead from the store, then people started to sell them cheaper to undercut others.

I see your point, but what I meant is... Lets assume I wanna trade an item that is priced for 10 keys. What prevents me from trying to buy this item for cash, instead of buying 10 keys from Valve and then trading the item for 10 keys.

1) buying an item that is worth 10 keys for cash would cost me 10x$1.50=$15
2) buying 10 keys from Valve and then trading them for an item would cost me 10x$2.50=$25

$10 of a difference. That's why I said it's hard to believe that people would buy keys for $2.50 just to trade them later for $1.50.

I already answered this question.

And I have no idea where are you getting that there are people buying keys for $2.49 to sell them at $1.50... Noone does that.

I might be misreading you, but from your statement I see that people buy keys for $2.50 to trade them later under the lower price.
Cause if someone sets up a price for unusual in keys (for instance, someone is selling an unusual for $60 or 40 keys) he assumes that the price for a key is $1.50 and if you, after buying keys on Valve, decide to trade thee 40 keys for this unusual - you will nominally spend 40.$2.50=$100 instead of requested $60.

Ahhh.. Nevermind,. It just gets confusing. My limited English apparently prevents me from explaining my point.
