The Steam Music beta has been announced. Invites will be going out sometime soon (maybe later this week or early next week?)
The Steam Music Beta is coming soon to SteamOS and Big Picture interfaces, with desktop features soon to follow. To express interest in beta participation, join the Steam Music community group. Group members will be invited in waves, until the feature is released to everyone.
With Steam Music, you can now listen to your music collection while playing games. Once you’ve pointed Steam to your local music directory, your Steam Library will include Album and Artist views of your collection.

It is pretty cool, but I still prefer to listen to the actual game music.

Why wouldn't you just alt-tab out and just make a playlist in iTunes/Windows Media Player/VLC/Winamp etc?
Just about every game nowadays does support alt-tab after all.
....Except fucking Capcom, that is.

Does this include podcasts? I'd rather listen to that when playing dota instead of constant pinging.

They don't care, they're just trying to expand even where it's not needed

Because it's being developed mostly for steam os?

I can get pumped the fuck up now while playing turbine. No more steam browser...

I just got into the beta.

some things to note:
  • by default, Steam Music will already include by default, your OS user account's Music folder as well as Program Files\Steam\Music, which is most likely designed for sharing music between Steam accounts used by different OS user accounts (or maybe Valve will release some free music at some time in the future)
  • not all Unicode encodings are supported. thanks to user input, Valve is aware of this, at least as far as some Cyrillic is concerned (I added to the discussion that Japanese text is also affected)
  • closing Big Picture will not stop music playback. despite the numerous submitted bug reports, this is by design since Valve is planning on adding desktop UI to control playback.

Welp, i'm in, not that i'd use it much ^^"
Let's hope that the steam music folder becomes the default folder for bought game soundtracks c:

I'm all for this since some games I can't alt+tab out of to manage my music. Namely, bethesda games seem to always crash when i alt+tab them on my craptop. Plus, playing on a craptop makes a steam-integrated music player sound much better than booting up an external program anyways, since I always have steam up regardless.

I think I'll still use external player anyway, but I'll try it out. It might be quite pleasant suprise. I'm not in, so I'll just wait.

I got the invite, but I don't see the "View All Music" button when in the Library tab of big picture. Halp?

EDIT: Fixed by turning on Steam Beta option in settings if anyone else is having the same problem.
