Yes. We get micspammers.

Some people don't like it.

They start a votemute.

All because they don't know how to client mute.

Server message instructing on how to do this, maybe before someone starts a votemute it'll give a "are you sure" type of message with how to client mute included.

You don't know how many times i've had to repeat how to do so.

I've never actually used !radio, what kind of stuff does it play? regular music or the remixes Toxik used to play before Valve broke HLDJ?
I miss those days…:(
Anything players request or the DJ plays.
I.. Enjoy it. Despite the fact it often plays very weird and shitty metal music.

It isn't possible to do client mutes through scripting.

Voice chat is only meant for voice. Playing music through it sounds awful. If you want music, play it through your computer or use !radio.

Otherwise if you've managed to offend more than the majority of players on the server, they should not all be forced to press escape, find the small radio button, then scroll through 30 names to find you and hope you don't reconnect and start spamming again.

Quite honestly, I hate it. The music isn't all bad, but I don't always like the songs, and it seems like none of my requests have ever gone though. On top of that there's at least one really annoying DJ that interrupts the song every twenty seconds with some shout-out, really gets on my damn nerves.

I don't get why people listen to it and then COMPLAIN about it. It's a FREE and OPTIONAL service. Either have music on from your own player or not at all and focus on the game.

Nobody ACTUALLY wants to listen to music on the shitty sample rate that Source Engine games offer through mic communications. It sounds like shit, and it's a waste of bandwidth.

We have a !radio command for a reason. Use that if you want to listen to music. Or run Winamp in the background or something. But don't make people suffer with your poor taste in music with shitty sound quality.

Also, constantly laying down on the mic (or using HLDJ-like programs which keep the mic channel open constantly) cause various client-side audio bugs for many users, which results in echo sounds, sound clips looping infinitely, and other problematic bugs. These bugs have existed for many years, and Valve has yet to fix them. Mic spammers (or people playing music) only serve to increase the chances of experiencing game-breaking audio bugs like this.

Client mute isn't the right response to mic spammers. There are rules against mic spamming for these reasons. Just because some people can't follow the rules doesn't mean that anybody else should be burdened with the task of client muting them, themselves.

And I can guarantee you that nine out of ten times, the majority of the people in the server do not want to hear somebody play music or mic spam. Only a few vocal users may condone it, but the rest of the players almost always hate it.

then again, i play pretty much exclusively on the VSH server, where micspam is allowed. i mostly play soundbites myself that feel appropriate to the situation, and sometimes get requests to play stuff. i don't see how client-mute isn't the right option to deal with micspammers, calling a votemute/gag isn't the ideal solution either, because it gags you (for whatever reason), and not being able to talk in a team-play heavy game is way more of a burden than a problem you can fix get by reconnecting (that being said, i've never experiences looping, echos or other bugs caused by micspam, and i've been micspamming for a long time, believe me).

Does it say anywhere explicitly that it's allowed on VSH? There's a different between it being allowed and it being enforced.

admins say it's allowed, so there's where i got the idea from. it's either against the rules to use HLDJ/similar programs or it ain't.
I don't think HLDJ even works anymore. I don't think any server has an exception to the rule. I tend to not care about Idle (and trade servers unless they're really annoying). If I'm on VSH and someone starts micspamming I'll ask them to stop. If they don't, it's a /mute. If they try to get back to dodge, then it's at least a 30 minute ban.

HLDJ still works on servers that run on the predecessor of the SILK codec, like VSH. the server rules should clarify whether micspam is allowed or not, one admins permits it; another one doesn't. seeing it isn't against the rules, why do you ask people to quit it? it's subjective to you whether you don't like the micspam or not, telling people to quit it whilst it's sporadically allowed.

servers automatically got upgraded to the SILK codec, the fact that HLDJ still works there means an admin manually changed the codec so that HLDJ could still be used.

on a side-note, I found a plugin that will let admins issue extended mutes/gags: ExtendedComm
this beauty mutes/gags by SteamID, effectively preventing dodging, and provides 3 methods of punishment:
  • Temporary punishments are only saved on the server where the punishment were issued. Depending on configuration, these punishments can be saved until map change.
  • Extended and Permanent punishments are saved to a MySQL/SQLite database and are automatically reapplied when the punished player connects to the server. This allows punishments to be applied across multiple servers.
    • Extended punishments will automatically expire in-game at the designated time.
    • Permanent punishments remain on the player until an administrator removes them.
I'm not knowledgeable about making plugins but with this, it may be possible to modify the servers' votemute to use this to issue mutes for however long Bottiger wants and completely prevent dodging

It might be a slight judgement call, but playing music through chat is definitely a no-no in my book. Like I said, doesn't really matter much on idle, but the crap quality and the fact that people always seem to blast it make it hard to actually play the game. We ban people for it all the time if they're constant.

I thought this used to be the case. Maybe it still is.
