One of our hosts sent this email.

During a routine check, we found that a powerbar in one of our racks might fail in the near future. This could potentially cause an unintended power downtime or power fluctuation that could damage the PSU of servers connected to this powerbar. We therefore decided to replace this powerbar in a emergency maintenance window on 8th of July after 8:00 PM CEST.

We have found that your service will not lose power at the schedule maintenance of 8th of July after 8:00 PM CEST , but these services might lose network connectivity for up to 15 minutes.

When

July 8th

What does "might" lose network connectivity mean? Either it will or it won't, I'd think they would know or be able to check.

for a second I thought they were saying that someone stuck one of these in the hardware:

Doubt the costs will increase that much, a 2nd PSU doesn't means the server will actually use twice as much, it just makes the PSU redundant for the other one to take over in case of failure
Hardware is not free, if it is, I've been doing something wrong.

if they'd had 2 PSU's in their servers they wouldn't have downtime at all, too bad :(

They actually do have 2 PSUs, see here:

We have found that your service will not lose power at the schedule maintenance

They will probably unbolt the PDU from the rack, keep everything plugged in to it, bolt the new one to the rack, and then move power cables one at a time.

I've done this before for my clients who have servers in the datacenter here in San Diego and it works fine as long as you're sure one of your PSUs hasn't taken a shit. Simply unplugging the remaining good PSU is a very bad way to find out. lol
