The current version was amended in 1954, that's when under god was added. Kids have never been required to recite this but if you don't swear your allegiance to this country.. who do you swear it to? If you don't believe in God, so be it, but don't make other peoples kids suffer just because your atheist beliefs fell to your kids.

edit - it was a requirement until the 1930s i believe

This guy was there at the end of a man he practically viewed as a national hero. THEN he had to live the rest of his life knowing he was on the losing side.
