Hey Skialites,

I've always wanted to get into the unusual trading business.
Today I bought some keys, totalling to 13.
I know this isn't that much but I'm planning on slowly building up my key stock.

I've read on numerous websites about traders quick buying cheap unusuals and reselling them at their normal price.
The same system was also being used for Australiums.

Should I invest my keys in this business?
Which kind of trading would be better, Aussies or Unusuals?
Any specific things to consider before starting to trade any of these?
How profitable is it, and is it hard reselling cancerous unusuals?
Do australium weps sell faster than U. Hats?

Thanks in advance for your tips : )

Well, I have traded about 200 different unusuals, and from my experience this is what I'd recommend:

- buy unusuals for 30-50% of the cheapest b/o price on outpost as a quicksell

- never buy unusuals with summer effects or cancerous effects such as overclocked, electrostatic, and powersurge (hats with these effects tend to take very long to sell, Imo most hats with these effects are what I call "permanent quicksells", which basically never sell unless you sell them for a very cheap price. Normally they are very hard to profit from efficiently. I will only purchase an unusual with a summer effect if it is 70% or more under the cheatpest b/o on outpost (I have purchased a KaW cannonball for 22 keys in the past) Also try to stay away from unusual taunts, they are no longer hyped and are very hard to sell.

- try to buy first and second gen's only, as they normally move quickly

- Australiums are harder to profit from than before as they are high in demand atm, therefore not many people are willing to quicksell them at a price in which you could make a profit from. Higher tier australiums (sniper rifle, rocket launcher, and scatter gun) sell quickly and easily for pure or a decent item overpay. Lower tier australiums such as the blutsauger, tomislav, and frontier justice sell fairly easily although there are not many buyers willing to pay their values in pure.

- Never get tempted to spycrab or unbox with your keys. The first unusual crab I participated in, I won. After that, I was hooked, and sooner or later I got to a point where I lost over 14 buds pure and 15 in unusuals crabbing. I have unboxed 270+ times (14 buds) and I have only unboxed 2 unusuals (Terror Watt Jefe and Miami Nights Jeepcap, worth ~5 buds). I don't know about you, but it was tempting for me to gamble keys whenever I had them, as you can see it is not very profitable...

- The best unusual server imo is PPM, I have yet to own an unusual that I couldn't sell in less than a day there if I advertised it in chat at a fair price.

If you have any specific questions fell free to ask me them.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Thanks for the detailed explanation, that'll help a lot.
A few questions though:
-Any classes to avoid? I've read that heavy unusuals for instance, are hard to sell.
-What should be a priority when buying unusuals: Effects' gen or the hat itself?
-Should I avoid dealing with dirty unusuals?

Never buy killstreak items
Collectors items never sell
Tf2 is bad
Cs go master race

-1 GO lacks cosmetics

Well, heavy hats are great if they have a decent effect. Why? They are normally the cheapest unusuals you can buy, and normally most newer players play heavy, therefore there is a market for them as many kids who play heavy end up wanting to spend their birthday money on some cheap unusual for their favorite class. Normally I buy most 15-19 key heavy hats for 8-10 keys and flip them for 10-14 keys. There is always someone willing to pay a small amount of pure for any unusual just to own an unusual. The same goes with engie hats. I would avoid cancer hats such as the dread knot and the hetman's headpiece.

I would prioritize first generation effects, the generation of hat doesn't matter unless it is retired.

When I buy quicksell unusuals, I normally don't even bother checking if they are duped unless they are over 2 buds. Most newer buyers don't really care if their first unusual is duped. I would recommend staying fair away from any gifted unusual, those are a pain in the ass to sell.

Chocobo is right, I got a knife in csgo that's worth more than most unusual's and I only spent $2.53 to unbox it. But don't get me wrong, tf2 is still one of my favorite games, it's a joy to party up with your friends and play late night, sometimes you have the occasional player report to file and sort out, but tf2 is fun, it's just that csgo is better

You must understand that CS:GO is a rather expensive economy or rather cheap, there is really no median that could get you some profit from what I've been told by some AK friends of mine.

I've done well over 2000 trades myself and am also trained in this field by several trading admins at MCT and other trading communities as well

As for TF2
  • Try a low-tier hat with mid-tier effect, effect matters more than hat.
  • Never pay B/Os
  • Don't go by backpack.tf prices a vast majority are outdated or not priced at all, for pricing, see the best C/O and the lowest B/O and get a median from there (if B/O is greater than best C/O)
  • Always be understanding, polite and welcoming
  • Be active, don't have a trade on Outpost and not bump it, try to every 1/2 hour - 2 hours
  • Be prepared when offered, if someone states they want to sell an item and their price is awfully high, prove it
  • Stick to unusuals, first gens / second gens, nothing else.
  • There tends to be a preference towards hats for soldier, pyro, scout and a little bit sniper, try investing into those class-specific hats
  • Be prepared when added, check users SR profile as well as profile comments and any other background information you can find
  • Duped hats tend to sell for lower, backpack.tf shows when a hat is duped for not, check their backpack, find the item, check it's history and if it's duped, there will be a notification saying it is
  • Low history items are preferred over items with large history, especially if there are no scammers in that history

On the Australium question, I haven't seen them sell as often as Unusuals. The only golden weapon that WILL sell, is the Golden Frying Pan. Good luck trying to tap into that mother-load. Starting is at 2,000.00$ (Not going by .tf prices, going by what I personally saw move, three of em.)
