When playing WoW or Planet Side 2 my FPS likes to sink to 5-10 for 1-2 seconds when rendering certain things, primarily players.

Once rendered, things smooth right back out until my computer has to render more players or what ever else it is.

For example, in WoW something as simple as turning around can cause my FPS to plummet, but it smooths right back out shortly after. I play in literal 200 player battles while they're all crammed on a small island, when rendering them in I get atrocious FPS but once they render in my FPS is perfectly fine.

In Planetside 2 there could be a massive battle going on, I can be getting a steady 30-45 FPS but the second I see a new batch of visible players I drop down to 5-10 for a second or two before it goes right back up to 30+. It will keep doing this every time new players pop up which makes it virtually unplayable.

In WoW, something as simple as loading in a tiny batch of textures (for example opening a map or opening my bags) will cause me to get a small lag spike while its loading in icon the textures. Once they load in they usually don't cause any more lag spikes from there.

Haven't tried played much else beyond WoW and TF2 in a long time so I can't yet say if its effecting other games, going to test some others out to see if it does it there too.

My friend told me its either my RAM or Hard drive.

Some time ago we scanned my hard drive for any errors and it came back with bad unrepairable sectors, plus its been making a rather rare click sound every so often so I'm not sure if my RAM isn't good enough or if my HD is taking a shit.

I kept a close eye on my hardware usage when the lag spikes happen:

- Processor usage doesn't spike and is nowhere near maxed out
- GPU usage doesn't spike and is nowhere near maxed out
- GPU memory usage doesn't spike and isn't maxed, doesn't max out even in 200 player battles in WoW
- RAM usage sits at 70-85% depending on whats going on, but hasn't maxed out or spiked during these lag spikes
- Hard drive usage goes through the roof

My specs:
Processor - i3-3240
GPU - GTX 650 1GB (not the Ti edition)
RAM - 4GB (1333 MHz I think)
OS - Windows 7 64 bit

Inside of WoW without render lag spikes I get anywhere from 25-110 FPS, average 30 FPS in 200 player battles, average of 45 FPS out in the open world

Planetside 2 gives me 25 FPS in large player battles, average 40 FPS everywhere else

have you tryed updating your directX or gtx driver?

haven't updated my video card drivers in a bit so I'll go try that

On a side note, I completely forgot that something very similar happened in 2013 with WoW. https://www.skial.com/threads/meowcenarys-computer-problem-thread-306-754-346-993.35657/

Since then I've done a hard drive test and its came back with bad sectors that it failed to repair. If I'm correct once you have bad sectors it has issues reading any data put on them
