How does the idle server work?

How does it work? If you die and receive items, can you still spawn and get more, even while you're in the new item screen?

The energy it costs to idle is not worth the 9 items lol.

Playing and idling to get your items is basically the same :| going to spend the same amount of energy for the most part.
