Since he's right, let me explain how #1 works:

8 (Ok, One 8 (18)... Got it. So then it becomes...)
18 (There's One 1 (11) and One 8 (18). So then that becomes...)
11-18 (Now there's Three 1's (31) and One 8 (18). So then THAT becomes...)
31-18 (Now there's Two 1's (21), One 3 (13), and One 8 (18).)

And so on... The math riddle becomes pretty obvious once you see it.
