Data Leak Warning (full source)

Mod Announcement
As I'm sure many of you have heard there has been a recent data breach for TF2 and other source games. What does this mean for you? Basically you are significantly more vulnerable in multiplayer matches. It is definitely possible that someone could install a virus on your machine by just being in the same server. Your items and steam profile could also be targeted. For your own safety we would advise that you hold off playing untill this problem has been resolved. I do not know how long that will be but we will keep you posted.

There will be consequences for posting/linking any downloadable material to the leak. It is ok to talk about it and to be informed. Stay safe my friends

Questions:

Can I play offline/local?

Hold off for now we do not know all the details and with no official statement from valve we do not know how at risk you are

Is it the same deal with CSGO/GMOD?

yes all source games I would avoid playing online there as well.

Can I still trade?

Avoid servers (even community ones). Due to the current situation I would day trading is ok but be very cautious.

Should I private my steam profile?

If you aren't playing on any multiplayer servers you are not at risk

It's safe to play now. The developers themselves speak on Twitter that it's safe to play. Everything is OK with TF2

the CS:GO ones, the TF2 ones haven't
dev_tf2 isn't official, to make that clear
@TeamFortress on Twitter is official. They said that:
"We have not found any reason for TF2 players to be alarmed or avoid the current builds (as always, playing on the official servers is recommended for greatest security)".
Something like that.

Valve's Statement according to Polygon.
Source: https://www.polygon.com/2020/4/22/21231862/valves-tf2-source-code-leak-csgo-team-fortress-2-rce

"We have reviewed the leaked code and believe it to be a reposting of a limited CS:GO engine code depot released to partners in late 2017, and originally leaked in 2018. From this review, we have not found any reason for players to be alarmed or avoid the current builds (as always, playing on the official servers is recommended for greatest security). We will continue to investigate the situation and will update news outlets and players if we find anything to prove otherwise. In the meantime, if anyone has more information about the leak, the Valve security page describes how best to report that information."
