If I take redsun servers as an example, they have 40 players. It works great with 40, all is fair.
Maps were mostly designed for 32 players, so that extra 8 isn't too bad. An extra 18 however? That's a bit much to ask.
Stick to 40.

38-42 would probably be about the max I would say to do, some maps are already broken with more than just 36 players and its only going to get worse the higher you go, personally I thought the 36-player cap suggestion was the best middle ground between breaking maps and increasing the server pop.
 
Going above 40 is pushing it but it really depends on the map being played. Having 50 players was fun however I wouldn't want it to negatively affect the gamemode. It's important to make sure that it's still fair for Hale.
 
Could you provide some examples of some maps breaking with 50 players?
Stupidity has spawning issues with that many players, berlin hard crashes with more than 32 players during cutscenes, SpongeBob is on the verge of a map crash upon map load with more than 40 players and crashes with anymore, and I'm sure more will pop up and we inevitably cycle through all 30+ maps and their minis on the server.

Easiest solution seems to be limiting the player count to 36 then, unless everyone wants specific maps to be updated to support 50+ players..

Thats what the original suggestion was for anyways, I'm not quite sure why Bottiger raised it above 36, my best guess he thought it'd work similarly as well as it does for ze, but the game modes really aren't comparable.
 
You know, 50 is cool but too much. We asked for a 36 players server, and bottiger went into an absolute beast mode to increase the player count by 18 whole slots
i think that 40 is a good amount, 42 is max. Think about cocainum, hale has not chance on that map with 50 players!
and also, a server full of unusuals, hats, cosmetics, weapons being fired, movement being made. On low-end PCs, it could simply be unplayable due to low framerate. Think of it, it's TF2. Players still play it over CS2, Overwatch 2 and others. Some prefer it due to the fact that their PC is not good enough for other titles, so i suggest that 40 players is probably the best. Most fun without breaking the game!

Most maps are designed to be for 32 players, however if you go above 32 I believe things will break. Perhaps 40 or 42 would be enough?
