Counter-Strike: Global Offensive now supports 15v15 on official maps.
Increasing the player limit has been “one of the most requested map features,” according to the latest dev blog. “The spawn locations have been prioritized to accommodate various numbers.”
The developers noted, “server operators, if you allow for more players, you may want to play with the bot quota number to find a number that works best with your server.”

Why not more? BF3 supports 64. Is there a limit in the Source engine? Is 30 really the max they could get before balance was thrown out the window?

It's just what they're willing to support by default. You can put 64 players on a server, but everyone would be overlapping in spawn. With BF3, you don't all spawn in the same little spot.

30? Why not 32, like almost every other TF server?
They probably noticed that the maps were a little bit too crowded with 32. I've noticed that in TF2 having two or so less people on the map makes everything a bit less crazy.
