1. Dude has no real world money but he has keys
2. Dude wants to donate
3. Dude offers to sell someone keys so this someone instead of paying this dude back would pay to Skial so dude would get a donation status

Am I missing something? How could dude pay donation with keys without having "middleman" involved?

He can't, but that scenario fits the comment "you don't need paypal to donate".

While somewhere along the line you DO need paypal to donate, YOU don't need paypal as long as someone else does.
