I don't really understand this one. Console seems to be a bit overly paranoid in my opinion. Why am I unable to use a VPN and play?

I'd like to add that I play on the Mountain Lab server all the time. Anyone there would vouch for me not being a cheater/griefer/troll. I also gift lots of gifts away on that server.

=( Surely there is a way to work something out? I want to be able to run my VPN from my router at all times.

Hi.

Hackers use VPN's to dodge our IP based bans. We're sorry, but if you want to play on our servers, you cannot use a proxy.

Hackers use VPN to circumvent their bans. If you want to use a VPN, you have to setup your own as we block most publicly available ones. There shouldn't be reason you need to be playing over a VPN especially in an FPS where latency matters.

If I made a donation or something couldn't my ID be whitelisted? I have never had a problem until today. I have clocked many hours on the server . . . It's not like I'm hacking and ruining the game wherever I go . . .

My latency is literally the same when the VPN is turned on. I am trying to do an entire internet encryption. I have a few small business ventures at home and I need the extra protection.

Skial is such a great community with great moderation. Its a shame that blanket bans have to happen for the greater good of the community.

Micro-managing VPN's for who we make exceptions for is most likely going to be bothersome and far too much of a hassle (if it's even possible, I'm not extremely seasoned on the subject). You can't just turn it off?

Well I guess I'm going elsewhere. It is bothersome to have to shut down servers/change router settings just to play a round of TF2. I guess a STEAMid white list was just a pipe dream . . .

I don't know who will even see this but, Goodbye fair people of mountain lab! Whatever server I start playing on I promise I will bring gifts.

Thanks for the information guys I wish you all the best. Have a good evening.

Alright. Sorry to see you go, but being the large community we are and having as many hackers as we do, we need to enforce VPN bans. While we wish you could just have it off as you did before, we wish you the best.

So why would your small business require you masking your real IP address? You don't need to answer, but seriously. I would see if you're always traveling and want a secure connection, but if you're at home, it provides no more protection and it's just more hops to get to your destination. The problem is that you pay for the VPN through a site like privateinternetaccess.com, but that IP can be used by many people and it's a service that anyone can just pay and use so any potential hacker is $7 away from evading bans.

Me and my partner accesses remote servers all over the US. We also have a server at home. Sensitive data travels through my internet line as a whole. Because of this router level encryption is my safest option.
I don't really look at it as "Masking my internet connection." I look at it as guaranteeing the privacy of all data in and out of my connection.

Its unfortunate that hackers plague the servers. I had it in my head that a voting system and strong community support would solve most problems! I personally have never experienced a hacker on a skial server.
I doubt this will ever be a big issue with the community as a whole. On the off chance a steam id white list comes to be let me know if you remember!
If there is anything I can do to convince the PTB to consider some sort of player verification system let me know too!

You're posts here aren't using a vpn, why can you toggle it off for this but not for playing on the servers? Also, as stated you can get a private server whitelisted if you were to rent out a vps and setup your own vpn. It's a relatively simple process and you could easily find a half decent vps for 15-20$ a month.

Don't really get the need for a vpn on a secure network, for security reasons they're typically only used for unknown networks or because your company doesn't want to rely on whether or not employees are using secure networks, I don't see that as being an issue for you though. Your prerogative though I suppose.
