Compiz looks completely unneeded and useless

Absolutely, but there are a few things that make Compiz useful, such as these:

They're a couple of rehashes (well something else since they came first on Linux) of Windows/Mac features, but worth every penny that's on Windows/Mac. Cinnamon and Unity on Linux Mint and Ubuntu, respectively, use those plugins via Compiz.
